Helmets to Hardhats Helmets to Hardhats’ (H2H) mission is to help transition our military heroes into successful civilian careers in the building trades.

Helmets to Hardhats is a 501(c)3 nonprofit program that exists to connect transitioning active duty military, National Guard, and Reserves and veterans to the best careers in the construction industry.

Meet , Brandon Hatcher.

After serving in the Army, Brandon found his path through Helmets to Hardhats and joined LiUNA Local 477. After struggling to find the right career following military service, he says the union welcomed him like family and gave him a renewed sense of purpose.

Brandon credits his time in the infantry with preparing him for the physical and mental demands of the trades. Looking ahead, he hopes to earn his journeyman status and become a union steward so he can help mentor the next generation of skilled tradespeople. His advice to fellow veterans is simple: don't wait—take advantage of the opportunities available through Helmets to Hardhats as soon as you leave the military.

H2H recently hosted a Training Day for the Ohio State Building & Construction Trades Council in Columbus, OH, bringing together representatives from trades across the state.

Helmets to Hardhats staff, including Matti Arvidson, CRM Supervisor; Joe Osborn, Military Liaison & Ohio Valley Regional Manager; and Rob Schwartz, East Central Regional Manager, led the training and shared information on how H2H can help connect veterans with opportunities across the Building Trades.

We're excited to announce The BlackRock Foundation’s support for Helmets to Hardhats through the BlackRock Future BuildersTM initiative, which is helping expand access to skilled trades careers across the United States. The initiative supports organizations that are strengthening pathways into high-demand careers and helping more people connect to economic opportunity.

We're proud to be part of this inaugural national BlackRock Future Builders cohort.

This grant is helping Helmets to Hardhats bring a long-standing vision to life: a dedicated team of Veteran Trade Coordinators who can provide individualized case management to Career Seekers. BlackRock’s funding will launch this initiative with the first three VTCs serving the Midwest and Ohio Valley, significantly expanding H2H’s ability to provide personalized support.

Meet , Sean Fairman.

After serving in the Marine Corps, Sean transitioned into the trades through Helmets to Hardhats in 2024, joining IUEC Local 18 as an elevator constructor. He was looking for a career that mirrored the values he embraced in the military—discipline, teamwork, technical skill, and a commitment to safety—and found exactly that in the elevator industry.

Sean credits the Marine Corps with developing the work ethic, accountability, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities that have helped him succeed in his new career. While adjusting from military life to the civilian workforce presented challenges, he relied on perseverance and a willingness to learn to navigate the transition successfully.

His advice to fellow service members: start planning early, take advantage of programs like Helmets to Hardhats, and remember that the leadership, discipline, and teamwork you gained in the military are highly valued in the skilled trades.

Looking ahead, Sean is focused on completing his apprenticeship, mastering his craft, and becoming a trusted mentor for future apprentices while building a stable future for his family.
