Joe Osborn, Ohio Valley regional manager, attended the West Virginia National Guard Enlisted Professional Development Summit at Camp Dawson, WV. Helmets to Hardhats supported the event to educate WV National Guard members on registered apprenticeship opportunities in the skilled West Virginia building trades and relay the little-known fact that they can use their GI Bill benefit to supplement their apprenticeship wages.

Meet , Brent Wright.

After serving in the Army National Guard, Brent transitioned into the trades in 2026 with UA Local 396. Motivated by the opportunity to build a strong future for his family while working with his hands, he found a career that offered stability, benefits, and purpose.

Brent credits the military for teaching him discipline, adaptability, and how to think outside the box. He also shared that his H2H representative made the process seamless — connecting him with his union within an hour of their first phone call.

His advice to fellow service members: “Absolutely, without question, use Helmets to Hardhats.”

Akron Area Electrical JATC is helping apprentices of all experience levels build successful careers through hands-on training and classroom instruction. Whether you’re brand new to the trade or ready to take the next step, their program is designed to help you grow into a journey-level electrician.

Recently, Joe Osborn, Ohio Valley Regional Manager, toured the training center alongside two local veterans interested in the program. Matt Capozzi, Training Director, gave the group an inside look at both the commercial and residential wireman programs, including conduit bending, cable installation, electrical equipment, and fire alarm systems.

The hard hat was invented in 1919 by Edward Bullard, inspired by the steel helmets soldiers wore in WWI. One of the first major jobsites to require them: Hoover Dam in the 1930s. More than 100 years later, it's still the most recognized symbol in construction.

Meet Occidental Leather Hero of the Month, Timothy Williamson.

After serving in the U.S. Army, Timothy transitioned into the trades in 2018 with Carpenters Local 328. Looking for a new skill and a renewed sense of purpose, he found both in the union trades.

Timothy credits the Army for building his work ethic and problem-solving skills, which continue to guide him on the job today. Now working as a foreman, he’s focused on finishing his construction management degree and continuing his path toward becoming a superintendent.

His advice to fellow veterans: use your GI Bill benefits, explore the trades, and find what you’re passionate about.
