Why do so many small buildings lack elevators? 🏢⬆️

More elevators could mean homes that work for everyone, from growing families to neighbors aging in place.

Our co-founder Will Teass is speaking at on Tuesday, October 27, at the MLK Library, alongside Stephen Smith of the Center for Building in North America.

“The Cost of Going Up” explores how elevator requirements shape the cost, design, and accessibility of small multifamily housing in DC and beyond, and what we can learn from cities that do it differently.

That’s the driving question behind GreenHouse, our exploration of what single-stair design can make possible in mid-rise housing. This week, you can see the project in person at the 2026 Innovative Housing Showcase on the National Mall! Innovative Housing Showcase

From September 22–24, GreenHouse will be on display as part of the National Single-Stair Housing Design Competition exhibit, organized by David Baker Architects. Come see how single-stair design can open up more light, air, and livable space in mid-rise housing.

How do you celebrate a long weekend? We’d say: outside.

In honor of the upcoming Labor Day weekend, we’re highlighting a few of our favorite outdoor spaces we’ve designed for gathering, relaxing, dining, and enjoying the landscape. From intimate courtyards to outdoor kitchens and gardens, these spaces extend the experience of home beyond its walls and give us a reason to slow down and spend a little more time outside.

How do you design a home that truly belongs to its site?

For us, it starts with understanding the land. These study models represent two very different custom residential projects: a bespoke home near Rock Creek Park that engages with its sloped site, opens toward the park, and draws the landscape right up to the front door, and a new development of three single-family residences set within a dramatically sloping site.

Physical study models are a unique tool that allow us to explore the relationship between topography, scale, and massing in a way that drawings alone can’t always capture. From early studies to refined design decisions, these models are part of our process for designing custom homes that respond thoughtfully to both the site and the people who will call them home.

Which direction would you take this waterfront home? 🛶

For this custom renovation project currently under construction in Edgewater, MD, we developed four distinct exterior palettes to explore how we could bring new life to this unique home.

1 | Coastal Grey: Refined tones of grey create a clean, modern look.
2 | Pops of Red: Red accents call back to the original red siding, connecting the home’s past with its future.
3 | Green Wash: A deep sage wash unifies the entire facade, existing and addition.
4 | Warm Modern: A rich, warm palette adds depth and character.

One day. Three projects. Three very different scales. 🏗️

Last Friday, our construction site visits took us from a downtown office fit-out to a waterside home renovation to an affordable housing community. No matter the project scale or type, our focus stays the same: staying close to every detail as a design moves from drawing to construction. From reviewing details in the field to working through the unexpected, Construction Administration is where design decisions come to life.

Did you know July 30th is National Intern Day? 🎉

This week we’re celebrating Morgan Waterman, our summer intern and a fifth-year architecture student at Virginia Tech, heading into her thesis year this fall.

Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Morgan has spent the summer diving into professional practice, picking up new skills, and exploring a new city along the way. At the core of her design approach is the belief that architecture should be for people and place, designing with the people who’ll use a space, not just for them. When she’s not out exploring DC, you can find her crafting, reading, or simply searching for the best coffee shop.
