Construction is underway on this 8,300-square-foot residence in McLean, Virginia, where each phase is bringing the design vision closer to life. From the home’s scale and layout to the architectural details still to come, the project is being thoughtfully developed to support both everyday living and the way the homeowners will experience the space for years to come.

We took a break and headed into Colombia’s Coffee Region, where we visited the beautiful town of Filandia.

Filandia is a reminder of how architecture helps shape identity. Its colorful facades, timber balconies, vibrant streets, and walkable townscape preserve the character of Colombia’s coffee culture while creating a strong sense of place.

At the heart of the town is the main plaza, anchored by the church. This timeless urban composition, inherited from Spanish colonial planning, continues to define community life today.

Surrounded by rolling coffee plantations, lush green mountains, and breathtaking viewpoints, Filandia brings together craftsmanship, tradition, landscape, and daily life in a way that feels deeply connected to its setting.

Sometimes, stepping away from work is the best way to find new inspiration. Places like Filandia remind us that great design is rooted in culture, history, and a meaningful sense of place.

The design phase is nearly complete for our new custom home project in Bethesda.

Designed in a contemporary style, this home is defined by clean lines, expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, and light-filled living spaces. A simple material palette of light brick and black accents gives the home a timeless, sophisticated character.

Every space was carefully planned to maximize natural light, connect with the surrounding landscape, and support a home that feels both functional and welcoming.

We are excited to move into the next phase and look forward to seeing this design become a reality.

A successful home addition should feel like a natural extension of the original architecture.

When designing an addition, especially one that includes a usable attic, we pay close attention to how the new space will transform the home’s exterior. Scale, proportion, rooflines, and architectural character all play an important role in how the addition is perceived from the street.

Throughout the design process, we create multiple 3D façade studies to evaluate these details before the design moves forward. This allows us to study how the addition relates to the existing home and make sure the final design feels balanced, intentional, and true to the home’s character.

The goal is not for the addition to compete with the original architecture but to enhance it. When done thoughtfully, an addition can support the way a family lives today while still feeling rooted in the neighborhood around it.
