Not every roof needs to be replaced.
And not every roof is a good candidate for a coating system either.

This one landed right in the middle.

The roof wasn’t failing, but it wasn’t in great shape either. It still had some serviceable life left, so instead of pushing a full replacement or full coating system, we focused on what actually made sense.

We addressed seams, penetrations, flashings, and the major problem areas using Gaco products to extend its performance and protect the building.

Could we have sold a full coating system? Yes.
Would it have been the right long-term solution? No.

There’s existing moisture in the insulation and two roofing systems already in place. Installing a full coating over a compromised substrate would have created bigger issues down the road.

This solution gives the building owner a few more years adding time to plan, budget properly, and make a smart capital decision instead of reacting under pressure.

Sometimes the best value isn’t the biggest job.
It’s the right recommendation.

When roofing turns into improvisation, the problems don’t disappear—they just get hidden.

This photo is a real-world example of what we see far too often in the roofing industry. Shingles installed over a ridge vent… then “corrected” with another metal assembly layered on top. This is NOT our work, but it’s a great example of shortcuts replacing proper craftsmanship.

Instead of fixing the ventilation and ridge termination the right way, someone stacked materials to cover the issue. The result?

❌ Trapped airflow
❌ Poor drainage
❌ Multiple long-term failure points

More material doesn’t equal a better solution, it usually just delays the failure. Quality roofing means solving the problem at the source, not hiding it and hoping for the best.

From the Windows to the Walls! 🪟🧗‍♂️

We recently helped a homeowner in Southeast DC replace attic windows to meet egress requirements by installing beautiful new Andersen true divided light wood windows that preserve the character of this historic home while bringing it up to code.

While we were there, the homeowner asked if we could bring her son’s creative idea to life, a custom climbing wall in the same space! We designed, framed, and finished it with precision using high-grade birch plywood, a clean fastener layout, and a natural finish to match the attic’s warm charm.

From structural to playful, this project was a perfect blend of craftsmanship and creativity. Built By Bennett handled every detail from start to finish.

This Federal-style townhouse has been thoughtfully revitalized to honor its early 20th-century roots while embracing modern luxury.

The team at Built By Bennett led a full bathroom reconstruction, seamlessly complementing the home’s new gourmet kitchen and the carefully restored historic millwork.

• Repurposed crystal lighting from the Waldorf Astoria

Old homes don’t give you perfect square walls. They give you character.

This historic DC rowhouse just got a front-door upgrade that fits exactly as it should. We installed a custom-width, custom-height ProVia door built to match the 100+ year-old masonry opening, not the other way around.

✨ The original stained-glass transom? Still shining.
🏛️ The brick arch? Still intact.
🚪 The new door? Now seals tight, swings smoothly, and locks securely.

We kept the facade’s historic look while bringing the performance up to modern standards: energy efficiency, security, and comfort.

Why go custom?
Because rowhouses weren’t built to today’s standard sizes. A custom door means no filler panels and no awkward gaps. Just the right proportions and a perfect fit that respects the home’s history.
