How can adaptive reuse preserve the character of former industrial buildings while opening them to new uses and incorporating sustainable design?

Join Ethan Marchant AIA LEED AP, a Principal at Quinn Evans, at the 2026 Association for Preservation Technology Washington DC Chapter Symposium - Adaptive Reuse: Policy in Practice, for "Built for Industry, Rebuilt for Opportunity: Sustainable Adaptive Reuse of The Packing House." Ethan will explore the sustainable adaptive reuse of The Packing House in Cambridge, Maryland, and the opportunities that emerge when an industrial building is given a new purpose.

Congratulations to Henrico County Public Schools on earning first place in the 2026 Virginia School Boards Association Excellence in Workforce Readiness Awards.

The award recognizes “Hands-On Learning, Real-World Impact: Students Build a School,” an initiative through which students at the ACE Center at Hermitage are helping complete their school’s second floor. Using architectural drawings prepared by our team at Quinn Evans, students are applying what they learn about construction while gaining real-world experience across multiple trades.

A new report by BJH Advisors shows that Michigan Central, Ford’s 30-acre innovation campus in Detroit, has created $5.2 billion in economic impact since 2018.

The centerpiece of the campus is Michigan Central Station, a former train station that sat vacant for 30 years before Ford Motor Company acquired it. Collaborating closely with Ford, Quinn Evans led a multidisciplinary team of architects, engineers, historians, and conservation specialists to rehabilitate the monumental structure.

BJH’s report shows that Michigan Central generated $2.95 billion of economic impact in 2025 alone and projects that figure will rise to $3.2 billion annually by 2028.

This National Lighthouse Day, we're celebrating the work that goes into restoring iconic beacons across the nation as they withstand harsh weather, high winds, and intense sunlight.

In the Outer Banks of North Carolina, significant progress has been made in the ongoing restoration of the iconic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, with major construction and preservation milestones designed to protect one of the nation's most recognizable historic landmarks. Work will continue over the coming year with restoration of the lighthouse's daymark, historic elements, and surrounding landscape. Overlooking Lake Superior in Minnesota, Split Rock Lighthouse celebrated the completion of its Trails & Landscape and Lighthouse Restoration projects after years of planning, preservation, and hard work. The celebration culminated on July 31 with a special lighting of the beacon, marking the lighthouse's 116th anniversary as the sun set over the lake. After sitting vacant for more than 20 years, the historic Walter French School is serving the Lansing, Michigan, community in a new way.

In our latest Insight, Quinn Evans Principal Ann Dilcher, AIA, LEED AP, APT RP, discusses the process of adapting the nearly 100-year-old school to provide affordable housing, a daycare, and offices. The conversation explores the challenges of converting the historic building for mixed uses, designing for both historic and low-income housing tax credits, and balancing accessibility requirements with the preservation of the school’s original character.

For a building that had been vacant for so long, its conversion gives this prominent southeast Lansing landmark a new purpose and brings people back into its halls.
