As we conclude Black History Month, we are reminded of the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the contributions of African Americans throughout history. Our founders, Jabali Nash and Kevin Bradford, ambitiously and courageously established HEP Construction to inspire future generations to pursue business success. Our current leaders continue this legacy by empowering team members to take on new and challenging projects while highlighting the diverse accomplishments within our team.

Our leaders combat stereotypes by leading with kindness, dignity, understanding, and honesty, demonstrating to the broader industry how a Black-owned construction business can thrive. We also celebrate our team through regular team-building and recognition events, ensuring they know they are appreciated. We take great pride in being a Black-owned business in Anacostia, DC, and we hope to remain here for generations to come.

On October 25, 1997, The Million Woman March was held in Philadelphia, PA. The event was one of the largest gatherings of women globally. Although the focus was on women in the Black community, women of all backgrounds supported and attended the rally. It was one of the largest demonstrations in US History, bringing together between 500,000 and 2 million people. The platform for the march was to address and bring to light several issues, including demands for the release of political prisoners, demands to end homelessness, and improvements in healthcare and education. Speakers included Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Maxine Waters, Sistah Souljah, and a message read by exiled American political activist Assata Shakur.

Black History was made on May 16, 1997, when US President Bill Clinton formally apologized to survivors of the unethical and racist Tuskegee Syphilis Study in a White House Ceremony. The Tuskegee Syphilis Study targeted African Americans from rural Alabama and was conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) from 1932 to 1972. Researchers did not obtain informed consent from participants and deliberately withheld available treatment from the participants diagnosed with syphilis so that they could study the progression of the disease, leading to widespread distrust of medical research within the Black community. The formal public apology from President Clinton in 1997 aimed at repairing trust within the African American community and it also led to the creation of the National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care at Tuskegee University to further address issues of medical ethics.

Black History was made in 1997 when Guion "Guy" Bluford Jr. was inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame. Bluford grew up in Philadelphia, PA, and is recognized as the first African American to travel to space when he flew aboard a mission on the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1983. Guy Bluford, a retired colonel in the US Air Force, flew aboard four space shuttle missions during his career as a NASA astronaut.

Black History was made on April 13, 1997, when Tiger Woods, then 21, won his first of five Masters Tournaments, becoming the tournament's youngest winner. Eldrick Tont "Tiger" Woods is a professional golfer of African American heritage from Orange County, California. He is regarded as one of the greatest professional golfers ever and is a 2021 inductee into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Black History was made on April 7, 1997, when Wynton Marsalis became the first jazz musician to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his epic oratorio Blood On The Fields. The oratorio tells the story of two enslaved people, Jesse and Leona, and their arduous journey to freedom. Marsalis, a Black American trumpeter, composer, and instructor from New Orleans, LA, is the current artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, which is an organization that advocates for jazz, culture, and arts education globally; he is also the leader of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

Black History was made on January 22, 1997, when Danyell Walters (née Wilson) became the first African American and second woman tomb guard of the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, a service prohibited to women before 1993. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in Arlington, VA, honors the unidentified remains of three combatants from World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. In 2018, Walters, a native of Montgomery, AL, was inducted into the US Army Women's Hall of Fame.

In 1997, Black History was made in Washington, DC, with the founding of H.E.P. Since our founding, we have had successes, failures, growth, and formed legacies. We wouldn't be the great organization we are today without the foresight, strength, and determination of our founders, Kevin Bradford and Jabali Nash. Several other ambitious leaders created their own Black History in America the same year of our founding. Join us this Black History Month as we explore, highlight, reflect on, and celebrate how Black History was made in the year of our founding, 1997!
