I took in a few more loads of Walnut they were slightly damaged in hurricane Helene. They weren't dead or on the ground, but they were lodged in other trees or leaning badly where they would eventually go down. It'll probably make close to 2000 board feet. This is one of two stacks.

And I'm supposed to be getting some stumps this time! Trimmed up and pressure washed. I'm going to try my hand at cutting Walnut r***e stock blanks from the root stock.

Someone told me I was leaving everybody hanging on quarter sawing oak.
He's right. I did that. Mostly because I was working and breaking stuff at a record pace.

The point of quarter sawing is to get the growth rings perpendicular to the surface of the lumber. That way the lumber is more stable dimensionally, a little bit harder and durable on the face, and it gives a beautiful surface that way. The little speckles on the quarter sawn face it's called medullary rays. I tend to just call it fleck because a lot of Southerners like one syllable words.

I'm sure I'll get a little better at putting videos together but I doubt I'll reach expert status. I'd rather have just really good lumber, but it is fun sharing a few things.

Forest to lumber in 2 hours.

Quality was quite good. There was a small rotten spot on the stump, but it appears that will have minimal impact. The spalting is excellent.

If you watch the video, the tree to the right is also dead. It's pretty sketchy and a dangerous one to cut.
I haven't decided if the reward is worth the risk!

We had a big sweet gum die. I wanted to get it before it went bad. I dropped it this morning. Lots of limbs broke, but this tree didn't try to kill me. The little oak tree got a serious haircut, but it should be fine.

And Batgirl helped with final assembly plus directing traffic.

Eastern Red Cedar with Australian timber oil.

If someone hits this one I'm putting in 6 inch well casing, concrete filled and buried deep. An unnamed tree man schwiped it clean with his gooseneck trailer leaving the yard. Many years past though.

He dropped by with some posts and a black mailbox and was unloading it early one morning. I asked him what it was for. He said " you need to go look up at the road". šŸ¤£

118 board feet from one quarter. Don't try to do the math and say the log is 4x118 board feet. The pith is usually off center of the log by a few inches so some quarters are bigger than others.

But this does illustrate well what you get when quarter sawing. 14.5, 13, 10.5x2, 8x2, 6x2 are the widths I got, and then a rift sawn 4x4.

Why are there two of some widths? Because the cant was more rectangular than square. Sometimes I have to take two cuts off of one surface to keep the rings perpendicular to the board face. It could have just as easily been eight boards of all different widths.

I like to stop at 6-in width, but I will cut a 5 inch width if it's very pretty. I don't cut 4 in oak because it usually crooks a little bit and when you straighten it you get nothing. It doesn't pay.

I'll get a video of actually cutting the next quarter.

OOPS.
I should quit holding the camera. I needed both hands to do that right. It looks small now, but it's still a 950 pound piece of wood I threw around on the mill.

Making a quarter from a half.
We're finally handling pieces less than 1000 pounds.
(That's a stick). So now we can make little sticks out of big sticks.
