When on service calls, the most common question asked is: "what is the best appliance to buy?" Hopefully this post will help you a make good appliance buying decision. Overall, appliances are not built as robust as they used to be. Most appliances are built to last 4 to 7 years. Each brand will have a different way of getting the job done. Most brands from model to model will use the same basic method of washing, drying, cooling. For example you can buy a basic dishwasher for $400.00 or buy one for $700.00. The wash method and mechanics will be the same with some variations. The more expensive models will have more features (bells and whistles). This also holds true for washers and dryers Carefully consider your needs and what will work for you and your family financially. Consumer reviews are somewhat biased. I think most consumer reviews are negative overall. Only 1% to 3% of appliances sold fail in the first year. So you really don't get a clear perspective on the product. Consumer Reports well give you a clearer perspective on the appliance and brand. One major factor to consider is service in your area. Well brand X have service in your area? If you live in a rural area 25+ miles from a major store such as (Best Buy, Home Depot, Menard's, Lowe's etc)., you will be unable to get service or it will be slow in coming. Most service centers don't travel beyond 20 to 25 miles from their shop. Sometimes you might be better off buying from a local appliance store in your area, just make sure they service what they sell. The appliances may be a little more expensive but at least you will get service. What good will it do to save a few dollars from a big name box store if you can't get your appliance serviced?
Just a quick comment on Sears. There are now two different Sears there is corporate Sears which is going down the tubes and there is Hometown Sears which is doing good. Your hometown Sears are your local Sears store in your community. So try not to confuse corporate Sears with Hometown Sears. Allot of consumers don't shop at hometown Sears because they don't realize there are two different Sears and they think Sears overall will not be here in the near future.
Just a recap on buying appliances.
1. Service availability
2. Features vs Needs and pricing
3. Read reliable reviews
4. Quality might vary from brand to brand depending on the year and model.
5. Pricing: Most of the time there is always a sale going on somewhere or there will be one soon.
6. Always buy a 5 year extended warranty regardless of where you buy your appliance from. ( you can read a previous post on extended warranties).

Happy appliance hunting

Going on vacation? The best thing you can do before you go on vacation. Is to shut your water off!! I have seen many fridges develop leaks, water filters freeze and burst, causing major water damage to the home. Also turn off your ice maker, I have seen ice makers that keep making ice and keep making ice which could leave a big mess in the freezer. Also washer water valves could develop leaks, so while you are gone your tub could overflow with water and cause water damage. I have done many repairs caused by leaks , busted water lines inside the refrigerator , replace many filter housings due to the water filter freezing and bursting and replacing washer water valves. Modern day appliances are great, but when they fail you could have major water damage to your home. So when leaving on vacation or leaving your vacation home turn off the water.
