The best security is the kind you never notice.

In forensic and psychiatric hospitals, the challenge isn't only keeping a building safe. It’s making a space that still feels human and therapeutic. At Norristown State Hospital, our team is helping design a security system that protect staff and patients without getting in the way of care. As Principal David Vargo puts it, "The intent behind our design is to go unnoticed."

Project Highlight - Carnegie Mellon University Health & Wellness - Calming Room

Carnegie Mellon University's 160,000 GSF Highmark Center for Health, Wellness, and Athletics, bring students well-being under one roof. The mindfulness and yoga rooms give students room to slow down, reset, and recharge in the middle of a busy campus day. Located alongside Counseling and Psychological Services and University Health Services, they're part of a center built in partnership with Highmark to support the whole student: mind, body, and everything in between.

Osmond Hall at Penn State is nearing the finish line!

This renovation of the 53,294 GSF Physics building is set to wrap up this year, and the transformation is taking shape. Once complete, Osmond Hall will give undergraduate and graduate students state-of-the-art labs, and an open-collaborative space where ideas can spark and spread. Behind the scenes, specialized spaces like a high-bay maker space, shared prep lab, and synthesis lab will support the next generation of discovery.

Sam Craig and Justin Boyer recently visited the site to see firsthand how construction is progressing. We're proud to help Penn State create spaces that foster collaboration, innovation, and academic excellence in Physics.

Every hospital upgrade adds technology, and technology adds noise.

Our Acoustics Discipline Lead, Josh Thede, PE, LEED AP BD+C, WELL AP, explains that even cutting a single hole in a wall can cut its sound isolation rating in half, making a room twice as loud. In a healing environment, that affects patient privacy, telehealth calls and how well people rest.

Renovating a building while it's still in use isn't just a construction challenge, it's a coordination challenge.

From telecom backbones to security panels, shared infrastructure rarely respects architectural boundaries. Our Director of Project Operations, Andrew Smith, CTS-D, RTPM, breaks down how the best teams plan before the first wall comes down, through early site surveys, staff interviews, and clear outage planning, to keep operations running smoothly throughout construction.

Project Highlight: University of Cincinnati - Old Chemistry Building

From a historic 1917 building to a 205,000 GSF hub for cutting-edge research, this renovation is a serious glow up. We revitalized the original structure and completely replaced the 1938 addition, adding 144,000 GSF of brand-new lab and learning space for UC's College of Arts and Sciences and College of Engineering.

Plus teaching labs for organic & inorganic chemistry, engineering materials & fluids, and anatomy & neurosciences, because great research starts with great learning spaces. Historic bones, future-forward science.

For National Video Games Day, we thought it'd be fun to share 3 things game designers and building designers have in common. At BrightTree Studios, we like to think we're designing real-world experiences by unlocking human potential through design.
