Spongy moth caterpillars are flying!

The invasive, Lymantria dispar, formerly known as gypsy moth, caterpillars have hatched from their beige egg masses. They throw out a strand of silk and drift off in the breeze to disperse. When they land, they start feeding on the leaves of fruit and ornamental trees.

Look for fuzzy, short, black threads eating the leaves. Look very carefully, and you’ll see 3 pairs of blue dots followed by 6 pairs of red dots that become more obvious as the caterpillars grow.

An insecticide containing “Bt” manages small caterpillars under an inch long. Look for their black heads. When their heads become tan with dark speckles, they are too large for Bt to work. Bt is a naturally occurring bacterial insecticide that only kills caterpillars, no other insects. It is not a threat to “good” caterpillars, like Monarchs, because it is very short-lived. Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki breaks down in sunlight within a couple of days. Spray it in the evening for the best results.

We recommend using Monterrey B.t., Bonide’s Bt, or Bonide’s Thuricide products to control small caterpillars.
