Bensonwood Director of Business Development, Seth Clarke, was recently featured on the Real Estate Connections Podcast. Among other topics, he and host Mary Foerster discuss a common misconception in homebuilding: the idea that a house needs to “breathe.”

For much of the last century, what we have often called a breathing house was really uncontrolled air leakage through the building enclosure. High-performance construction takes a different approach, aiming for much greater control over airtightness and thermal performance from the start.

That control becomes much easier to achieve when the enclosure is designed as a system and fabricated through a repeatable manufacturing process.

This Thursday, Bensonwood's Tedd Benson, Seth Clarke and Joseph Murray will deliver a talk at NESEA- Northeast Sustainable Energy Association's BuildingEnergy NYC focused on one of the biggest challenges facing the construction industry today: fragmentation.

Titled "A Dimensional Grammar for a More Interoperable Construction Industry,” the session will look at how shared dimensional standards could help designers, manufacturers, and builders work from a more coordinated foundation. Drawing on decades of experience with panelized building systems and offsite construction, the discussion will explore how moving more complexity into design and manufacturing can improve consistency, reduce inefficiency, and support more scalable high-performance housing.

The goal of this approach is to create enough common structure for better systems, products, and teams to work together more effectively.

This custom project in New York’s Hudson Valley came together in two phases. The ADU was completed first in fall 2025, followed by the main house raising in July 2026.

As the homeowners explained, “We see the ADU as part of the main house and the entire land,” adding that they never wanted it to feel “apart” from or tacked onto the main house. Both buildings were designed around that relationship from the start.

Watching the buildings take shape became one of the most memorable parts of the process. They described the raising as “almost too fast to comprehend and keep up with,” with each structure progressing at roughly one story per day.

Designed by Fabrica Architecture Studio, the project brought their architectural vision together with Bensonwood’s engineering, off-site fabrication, and raising crews to carry both buildings through to a weathertight shell.

Another Huffling Hoedown is in the books, and this year our Bensonwood community raised $14,000 for the Fall Mountain Food Shelf!

The annual event brings employees, friends, families, local businesses, and community partners together for an afternoon of food, games, raffles, and fundraising. Carrying Mary Lou Huffling’s name forward makes the day especially meaningful, and we’re grateful to everyone who helped continue the spirit of generosity she brought to this community.

Along with the funds raised, guests helped stuff the company van with non-perishable food donations to deliver directly to the Food Shelf.

This lakefront home in Pocono Mountains region of Pennsylvania was designed by Foster Design Farm, with Bensonwood supporting the project through engineering, digital coordination, fabrication, and installation of the shell. Impact Building Solutions served as the general contractor.

A full-length lakefront deck includes a screened section, while the walkout basement was designed around watersports and storage, including durable double French doors sized to make moving kayaks and canoes easier.

On the exterior, thermally modified red oak sourced from Pennsylvania forests provides a durable, chemical-free cladding designed to weather naturally over time.

Combined with a highly insulated enclosure and panelized construction, the project brings together custom architecture, offsite precision, and rapid onsite assembly in a home designed for long-term performance.

A carport can make everyday life a little easier through every season. It provides welcome protection from snow, ice, rain, and summer sun without the full scope of an enclosed garage.

This Bensonwood client built a custom home with us and has now added a 28 by 20 foot Douglas fir carport enhancing the property and carrying through the timber frame detail.

It also looks great against the New England foliage!
