🔥 CALIFORNIA ZONE 0 UPDATE | WHAT EAST BAY HOMEOWNERS SHOULD KNOW
On August 19, 2026, the California Board of Forestry approved the final draft of California’s new Zone 0 defensible-space regulations—an important step toward improving wildfire protection around homes.
Here is the important distinction: the regulations are not yet in effect statewide, and homeowners are not being required to immediately replace every wood fence within five feet of their home.
The current plan includes phased implementation for existing properties. A later phase addresses combustible gates and necessary fencing adjustments, with local jurisdictions helping establish timelines after the regulations become effective.
The statewide regulations will apply to properties located in State Responsibility Areas and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. Local fire-district and insurance requirements may apply sooner or vary by property.
At Duce Construction, we are already helping East Bay homeowners explore custom aluminum and steel fencing that supports their Zone 0 and defensible-space goals—without sacrificing privacy, character or curb appeal.
From realistic wood-grain finishes and modern horizontal designs to completely custom steel gates, fire-conscious fencing can still feel thoughtfully designed for the home.
If fencing or a gate approaches or connects to your structure, we can evaluate the location and discuss attractive, practical options as these regulations continue moving forward.
