๐ŸŒŠ A stone river is taking shape!

We are right in the middle of creating this faux stone river, and we are already loving the way it is starting to move through the landscape.

One of the fun things about using stone this way is that it can create the feeling of water and movement without actually using water. The curves, changes in width, and placement of individual rocks are what start turning a line through the yard into something that feels much more organic.

Right now you are seeing the bones of it.

We cannot wait to show you what this looks like when it is finished! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿชจ

๐ŸŽจ Happy World Teachers Day!

Today we want to take a moment to recognize a very special local educator and friend, Alexandra Hollingshead, founder of Rebel Art School in Walnut Creek, along with all of the incredible teachers who make Rebel what it is.

Alex and Mike have known each other since they were kids themselves, which makes it especially meaningful that all these years later, Rebel has become part of our own children's education.

As a homeschooling family, finding places where our kids can learn with their hands, explore their creativity, work alongside other students, and learn from people who genuinely love what they teach is incredibly valuable to us. Both of our boys, now 17 and 11, attend Rebel as part of their hands on education.

But what Alex and her teachers have created reaches far beyond our family.

Rebel gives kids and adults in our community a place to experiment, make things, get messy, learn new skills, make mistakes, try again, and discover that creativity does not have to fit neatly inside the lines.

Teachers do so much more than teach a subject. The really special ones create spaces where people feel safe enough to learn.

Alex and the entire Rebel Art School team have built one of those spaces right here in our community.

Thank you for everything you teach, everything you encourage, and everything you have created for Walnut Creek. โค๏ธ๐ŸŽจ

๐Ÿ’ง Valves, valves, valves!

They may not be the prettiest part of a landscape, but they are doing a whole lot of work behind the scenes.

Irrigation valves control when and where water moves through your system, allowing different areas of the landscape to be watered separately. When one starts leaking, sticking, failing to open, or simply getting old, irrigation problems can show up in some pretty confusing ways.

Sometimes the problem is not the sprinkler.
Sometimes it is not the drip line.
Sometimes you have to go back to where the water is being controlled.

A good irrigation system is only as reliable as all the little pieces you rarely think about. ๐Ÿ’ง๐ŸŒฟ

And sometimes... there are a LOT of those little pieces. ๐Ÿ˜‚

โ˜•๐ŸŒฟ Happy International Coffee Day!

Today we're celebrating one of the world's most beloved plants and the people who grow it.

Because yes, coffee really does grow on trees!

Coffee plants are evergreen shrubs or small trees that produce colorful fruits commonly called coffee cherries. Inside those cherries are the seeds we know as coffee beans.

Which means your morning cup starts out as something growing in the dirt, being watered, pruned, tended, harvested, and cared for just like every other crop.

And International Coffee Day is also a great opportunity to think about the people behind that cup.

Coffee is grown by millions of farmers around the world, which is why certifications like Fairtrade matter. Fairtrade standards include protections such as minimum pricing and an additional Fairtrade Premium that producer organizations can invest back into their farms, businesses, and communities.

If you'd like to support Fairtrade coffee, look for the Fairtrade certification mark when you're shopping. Certified coffee is available from companies including Equal Exchange, Kicking Horse Coffee, Gimme Coffee, Three Keys Coffee, Metropolis Coffee Company, and many others.

So today we're raising our mugs to the coffee plant, the farmers who grow it, and the very long journey from a little fruit growing on a branch to the cup keeping us awake while we're working in your yard. โ˜•๐Ÿ˜‚๐ŸŒฑ

Happy International Coffee Day!

๐Ÿ‚ Sometimes nature leaves the best little trinkets behind.

One of our favorite parts of spending our days outside is finding the tiny things most people walk right past.

An interesting rock. An acorn. A perfectly curled leaf. An empty shell. Or, like this day, a beautiful little feather lying on the ground.

But feathers come with an interesting catch.

As tempting as it is to tuck a beautiful feather into your pocket and bring it home, many native wild birds are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Those protections extend to their feathers, which means that in many cases you cannot legally keep a feather simply because you found it on the ground.

There are exceptions and specific rules depending on the species and circumstances, but when you do not know what bird a feather came from, the safest option is pretty simple:

Admire it.
Take a picture.
And leave nature's little trinket where you found it. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿชถ

Honestly, sometimes finding it is enough.

โœ‚๏ธ There is something incredibly satisfying about a freshly shaped hedge.

Good hedging is not just about making shrubs smaller. It is about maintaining their structure, keeping growth dense and healthy, and creating clean lines that complement the rest of the landscape.

And when you have a property with this much texture and movement happening in the garden, those beautifully defined shapes give your eye somewhere to rest. ๐ŸŒฟ

A little controlled structure surrounded by a whole lot of nature.

๐Ÿพ Our favorite kind of supervisor.

If you have ever wondered whether your dog needs to stay inside while Halcyon is working in your yard, the answer is nope!

As long as your furry friend is comfortable and safe around people working, we are more than happy to have the company.

Dogs wandering over to inspect our work, supervising from the patio, bringing us a toy, or simply stopping by to say hello are a pretty normal part of our workday.

We are working in their yard too, after all. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿถ

So no need to apologize when your four legged family member comes over to investigate. We don't mind one bit.

Honestly, some of our best coworkers have paws.

๐Ÿ“ Strawberry guava season!

One of those plants that makes you stop for a closer look.

Strawberry guava produces these beautiful little red fruits tucked among thick, glossy evergreen leaves. Despite the name, it is actually a member of the myrtle family and is native to South America.

The fruit is edible when ripe and is known for a sweet, slightly tart flavor that has earned it the strawberry guava name.

It is also a good reminder that landscapes do not have to be purely ornamental. Fruit trees and edible plants can add color, texture, shade, and something you can actually harvest.

Pretty and productive is a combination we can get behind. ๐ŸŒฟ

Sometimes a space does not need to be completely reinvented. It just needs to be finished.

This existing flagstone patio had great bones, but the wide, uneven spaces between the stones made the whole area feel a little unfinished.

Cleaning up those spaces and filling them with a dark contrasting material gave the flagstone definition, created a much more cohesive surface, and completely changed the way the patio reads.

Same stone. Same garden. Same patio.

A much more finished space.

Swipe for the before. ๐ŸŒฟ

๐ŸŒฟ California Native American Day ๐ŸŒฟ

Native plants are not a landscaping trend.

Long before we used words like sustainable landscaping, habitat gardening, or climate conscious design, California Native peoples were living with, tending, cultivating, and stewarding these landscapes.

That history matters.

California is home to more than 100 federally recognized Tribal Nations, each with its own distinct cultures, traditions, languages, and relationships with the land.

Indigenous stewardship practices have included sustainable harvesting, cultivation, and the careful use of cultural fire to support plant communities, wildlife habitat, traditional foods, medicines, and materials.

Today, many California Tribal Nations continue this work, including partnerships that are bringing traditional stewardship practices back to landscapes where they were once prohibited.

For those of us who work with the land, California Native American Day is a good reminder that caring for a landscape is about more than how it looks.

It is about understanding where we are.

Learning what belongs here.

Protecting what lives here.

And remembering that people have been caring for this land since long before any of us called it landscaping. ๐ŸŒฑ
