One thing I don’t think most people realize about surveying is how much of it is built on problem solving that never really looks the same twice.
No two sites are identical. No two histories are identical. And no two answers come from the same path.
A lot of the work happens before we ever step outside, going through records, maps, prior surveys, and information that’s sometimes decades old. You’re essentially piecing together a property’s history to understand what’s true today. That part of the job is something I’ve always enjoyed.
It’s not just technical, it’s investigative. And when you finally bring all the pieces together, you’re not just producing a map. You’re creating clarity where there was uncertainty.
That’s the part of surveying most people never see. But it’s also the part that makes the work meaningful.
