Ever wondered what all those letters and numbers mean when shopping for a new heating or cooling system? You're not alone!

These ratings tell you how efficiently your system uses energy, which can make a big difference in your monthly utility bills. đź’ˇ

Here's a simple breakdown:

❄️ SEER (Cooling Efficiency)
Think of this as your air conditioner's energy-saving score. The higher the number, the less electricity it generally takes to keep your home cool.

🔥 AFUE (Furnace Efficiency)
This tells you how much of your furnace's fuel actually turns into heat. For example, a 90% AFUE rating means 90% of the fuel becomes usable heat, while 10% is lost.

🏠 HSPF (Heat Pump Heating Efficiency)
This measures how efficiently your heat pump warms your home. The higher the number, the more heating you get for the electricity used.

Your furnace may have been sitting quietly all summer, but that doesn't mean every electrical connection inside it is still in perfect condition.

Over time, vibration, heat, dust, and moisture can contribute to:

⚡ Loose electrical connections
⚡ Corroded terminals
⚡ Overheated or discolored wiring
⚡ Weak blower motor components
⚡ Failing capacitors
⚡ Control board problems

These issues don't always cause an immediate breakdown.

Sometimes the first signs are a furnace that starts inconsistently, a blower that struggles to turn on, unusual humming, or a system that shuts down unexpectedly.

That's one reason fall maintenance is valuable. A technician can inspect electrical connections and components before your furnace is running every day during colder weather.

Dirty Filter Causing High Furnace Temperature
A heavily restricted filter reduces the amount of return air moving through the furnace.
That can cause:
Less airflow → hotter heat exchanger → high-limit switch activates → burners shut off.

The blower may continue running while the burners repeatedly cycle on and off. So check those filters regularly!
