We couldn't make it out to the arena in person this year, but we are just really glad to see the Rockhound being put to such good use by our neighbors.

While our daily work keeps us busy out in the woods focusing on forestry and wildfire prevention, community and regional heritage still mean the world to us. We’re just happy we could play a small part in helping the Chief Joseph Days crew get that dirt ready for a historic 80th year.

63.5 acres of technical terrain, and just Scot and I thinning and limbing every single acre from start to finish.

For the last two months, the two of us have been away from our home in Walla Walla, working completely on our own to finish a state resilience contract out in Ronald. The ground was no joke… lots of rock, steep roadside banks, and historic old coal mining roads that were practically cut in steep, cliff-like steps. We tackled it all with just two machines, two pole saws, a single chipper, and a serious amount of ibuprofen.

Our focus was strictly on establishing a strategic shaded fuel break. To be clear, this isn't a clear cut. It's a targeted layer of defense that goes way beyond a standard 100-foot Firewise zone to protect broader landscapes. It doesn't stop a fire completely, but it does two critical things: slows down a fast-moving fire and creates a safe, defensible road for emergency crews to stand their ground.

The local wildlife gave us the ultimate stamp of approval throughout the entire project. The deer and elk hung out with us from start to finish. In fact, a whole herd of elk would regularly bed down right in the completed sections while the two of us were still running the heavy machinery or saws nearby. We like to think they were supervising, but they were mostly just enjoying the extra breathing room.

We officially wrapped it up this week. Now that we are back in Walla Walla, we are ready to focus on our own neck of the woods. We have a few local projects lined up, and we fully intend to provide our direct assistance on our local fires if and when the need arises. It is a really neat feeling to see our hard work recognized. 🌲

The Washington DNR recently put together an article about a fuels reduction project we wrapped up last season for the Camano Hills community. This article in particular talks about our experience as the contractor working alongside state foresters and local landowners.

Forest health and fire prep can be incredibly overwhelming for property owners—both the cost of it and watching big machinery transform the landscape so quickly. We just feel grateful to be a small part of the solution, helping folks navigate cost-share programs and doing the heavy lifting to keep their land safe.

At the end of the day, we’re just a local crew that cares about doing right by the people who trust us with their property. If someone has a question while we're working, we'll always shut down the machine, step out of the cab, and take the time to talk.

The forest is usually a mess long before a spark ever flies.

Drought, insects, overcrowding — they beat it up slow, so by the time fire shows up, it’s basically kicking a door that was already hanging by one hinge.

Selective thinning and fuels reduction through mastication cut that nonsense off early, giving the stand some actual backbone before the next problem shows up looking for an easy win.

Mastication helps forests survive them all.
One treatment. Many threats addressed.

Spring is officially here! Pretty sure winter clocked in for one late shift… and then called it good.

We’re already hearing about fires — even a few red flag warnings popping up, which isn’t exactly typical this early. This year could get interesting.

We’re not here to sound alarms — just a friendly nudge from your local forest nerds.

A little work now doesn’t just protect your place — it helps everyone around you, too.

Reduce those ladder fuels, clean up around the house, take care of the obvious stuff before it turns into something bigger.

And please… be smart with burning. This year might not be the one to push it.

It’s one of those “deal with it now or deal with it later” situations — and later usually comes with a lot more smoke.

Even small actions can have a big payoff in the long run.

Spring Is On Its Way — But It’s Not Your Only Work Window

As spring rolls in, our schedule fills fast with folks hoping to get projects done before fire season. But the year is far from over.

🍂 Fall and winter are excellent times for forestry work (weather permitting). Cooler temps, lower fire danger, and fewer restrictions often make those seasons ideal for thinning and fuels reduction.

🔥 And while no one can predict the weather, if next winter is anything like the mild one we just had, planning ahead now will put you in a great spot for next season.

Summer isn’t always the easiest time to work—fire restrictions, shutdowns, and fire assignments can slow everything down. Starting the conversation early gives you more options and better timing.

Could Your Forest Project Qualify for Cost‑Share?

Cost‑share programs through your local DNR can help offset the cost of thinning, fuels reduction, and other forest‑health work. We don’t handle the paperwork, but we work closely with the foresters who do.

Here’s a quick look at how it usually works:
1. Start with a call — We talk through your goals and whether cost‑share might be a good fit.
2. Choose your first step — Set up a site visit with us, or we can help connect you with the right agency forester.
3. Forester visit — They walk the property, explain eligibility, and help with the application. We can join that visit when it’s helpful so everyone’s aligned.
4. Estimate from us — Based on the forester’s recommendations and what you want for your land.
5. Project work — Completed to program standards while keeping your priorities front and center.
6. Final walkthrough & reimbursement — The forester signs off, and the agency handles payment or reimbursement directly with you.
