Here, you'll see some of the process of this back deck restoration...

Gaps between the boards were compromised - hindering the fall-through of all organic debris, the drainage of rainwaters, and adequate ventilation;
therefore, promoting mold, mildew, and rot.

The deck was first softwashed w/ chemical,
so as to not further damage any already softened boards.
Then, it was allowed to dry thoroughly before being lightly sanded to break-off any peeling stain from the previous application done more than a decade ago.
Every gap was cleared of all debris and layers of stain and/or paint to allow for proper ventilation, fall-through, and drainage -
giving the deck a good chance to last a few or several more years.
Finally, new high quality stain & sealer was applied for a fresh, new look.

Over time and after having been restained or repainted and resealed time and time again, eventually you will notice the gaps between the boards getting narrower and narrower...
holding layers upon layers of stain, paint, sealant, debris, even pet fur and organic matter such as fallen leaves from nearby trees, that due to sitting moisture, have become more of a mud-like sludge.

THE PURPOSES OF SAID GAPS -
● Accommodate Natural Movement:
Wood (and to a lesser extent, composite) expands and contracts w/ changes in temperature and humidity.
W/o a gap, expanding boards will push against each other, leading to warping, cupping, and popped-out fasteners.
● Improve Ventilation & Airflow:
Gaps allow air to circulate beneath and around the boards, which prevents the buildup of moisture. Stagnant moisture under a deck creates a breeding ground for mold and structural rot.
● Enable Drainage:
Spaces allow rain or melting snow to drain through rather than pooling on the surface, which causes the wood to degrade prematurely.
● Allow Debris to Fall Through:
Leaves, pollen, and organic matter easily pass through the gaps instead of sitting on the deck.
If organic debris accumulates, it holds moisture and feeds mold, which creates a slick surface.

So, in order the buy some time for pressure treated wooden deck boards, this type of maintenance is essential;
therefore, before restaining or repainting, all that should be cleared out.
