When the Platteville Family Aquatic Center experienced a catastrophic failure in 2024, city leaders and residents set out to reimagine a valued community asset.

For JEO's Andrew Pennekamp, the project was especially rewarding. As an aquatics designer and Platteville resident, he brought firsthand knowledge of the community and a personal investment in the facility's future. That local perspective helped inform a new aquatic center designed to serve residents for generations.

Some projects begin with a blank slate. Others begin with the question, “Where do we go from here?”

That's the question our team helped answer through the Sandhills Discovery Center Master Plan following the 2022 Bovee Fire—a design recently recognized with a Nebraska Dakotas Chapter ASLA Award of Merit.

The plan incorporates fire-wise strategies, low-impact design, and community-driven programming to support education, recreation, and tourism throughout the region.

The new amphitheater at John C. Fremont Park made its debut during this year's John C Fremont Days, and seeing the space filled with music, celebration and community was exactly what it was designed for.

As part of a broader vision for the park, the new amphitheater and support building create a flexible gathering space that accommodates everything from large celebrations and performances to everyday moments outdoors. Every element was thoughtfully designed with Fremont in mind, creating a seamless connection between the amphitheater, native landscaping, and the way people move throughout the park.

It isn’t often you get the opportunity to create an aquatic amenity that reflects a state park’s rich history.

The design incorporates architectural details inspired by the park’s historic buildings, including the Mare Barn Complex, while the water elements draw inspiration from the park's famous stagecoach and water tower. The custom dual-racer body slide built into the hillside—the first of its kind in Nebraska—offers riders scenic views as they race down the hillside.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, learn more about Fort Robinson’s rich history, and help create an experience that highlights the many unique elements that make this park one of a kind.

After a soft opening over the weekend, Fort Robinson State Park has officially opened its new aquatic facility!

The state-of-the-art facility plays upon Fort Robinson’s Old West heritage and features:

• zero-entry access
• a 310-foot-long dual-tracking racing waterslide
• a stagecoach slide
• horseshoe bubblers for toddlers
• a spray feature modeled after the park’s longhorn cattle
• a dump bucket resembling Fort Robinson’s water towers
• and more!

The aquatic facility will be open daily noon to 7 p.m. 💦

For generations, campers, families, and guests have gathered at the lake at Carol Joy Holling Camp, Conference & Retreat Center in Ashland, Nebraska, to explore nature. After decades of sediment buildup, Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries (NLOM) knew it was time to restore the lake and enhance the experiences created around it.

The rehabilitation project improved water quality and aquatic habitat while adding enhanced fishing access, new walking trails, and long-term sediment management features that will help protect the lake for years to come.

A ribbon-cutting event this spring marked more than the completion of a construction project—it celebrated the renewal of a place where memories are made and community connections grow.

We're proud to have been a part of this project that will help this special place continue serving campers and guests for generations.

What if your old plastic grocery bags could be used in building a road?

In South Sioux City, Nebraska, nearly 2 million recycled bags were turned into pavement as part of an innovative project we were proud to help design.

It’s easier than ever to get to Gretna Crossing Park—a summertime community destination in Gretna, Nebraska.

Working with City of Gretna, Nebraska, we designed the reconstruction of Capehart Road, one of the main routes to the park. The once hilly, gravel road was transformed into a beautifully paved urban street.

Our work didn’t stop there. We also provided construction services for both our project and an adjoining Sarpy County, Nebraska, roadway segment being constructed at the same time. Our efforts led to a literal seamless on-street connection between the two projects.

We’re honored that our work earned two industry awards: an Engineering Excellence Award from ACEC Nebraska and a Project of the Year Award - Transportation category from APWA Nebraska.

We’re grateful to celebrate these recognitions alongside the City and County and deliver a smoother travel experience for the community.

We recently welcomed 11 high school students to our Lincoln office as part of the Discover Transportation Engineering summer program. The event was presented by Nebraska Transportation Center (NTC).

After touring the office and meeting our team, the students stepped into the role of engineers and collaborated in teams to design safer streets around an elementary school.

This marks our third year hosting the event. Each year, we look forward to helping spark an interest in engineering among the next generation of creative problem solvers.
