The part people underestimate is the deciding.

Door styles, finishes, hardware, layout, where the outlets go, which drawer holds what. Every one of those is a real conversation, and the projects that turn out best are the ones where nobody rushed that stage.

So when people ask when they should start, the honest answer is usually sooner than they expect. Planning well takes real time, and it is the cheapest part of the whole project to get right.

The corner tub nobody used is now the shower everybody does.

That is the trade a lot of primary bathrooms are ready for. A big soaking tub wedged into a corner, filled maybe twice a year, sitting on the best square footage in the room. Convert it and you get a walk-in shower with space for a bench.

The old stall shower did not go to waste either. That footprint is a full linen closet now, floor to ceiling.

Textured glass in the shower window keeps the light coming in without putting the room on display. Creamy large-format tile, dark wood cabinetry, stone mosaic underfoot.

If there is a tub in your bathroom you cannot remember the last time you filled, that is usually the place to start.

Kids don't do homework in their rooms. They do it wherever you are.

Which is how the kitchen table becomes the homework table around this time every year, and stays that way until spring. A built-in desk fixes it without adding a room. Drawers for the supplies that otherwise live in a shoebox. Shelves at eye level for binders and library books. Space to leave a half-finished project out overnight instead of clearing it off for dinner.

Put it near the kitchen and it gets used. Put it upstairs and it becomes a place to set laundry.

Three different wood finishes in one kitchen, held together by a single door style.

White inset cabinets around the perimeter. Two green islands running through the middle of the room. A walnut buffet run under the windows. The same door profile on all three, so the room reads as one plan instead of three ideas.

The countertops work the same way. One primary color through most of the kitchen, then a darker accent that gives the walnut run and the front island a furniture feel.

Matching main and prep sinks mean two people can work in here at once without crowding each other. Windows that start right at the counter. Built-in pantries wrapping the refrigerator on both sides. Matte black hardware with bronze accents.

Labor Day marks the point where summer projects either wrapped up or got pushed to next year.

Some houses got the deck finished. Some got the kitchen redone before the graduation party. Others are heading into fall with the same list they had in May.

If you want the kitchen finished before the holidays, August is when the math starts to matter.

Design and material selections take a few weeks. Cabinets take 4 to 6 weeks to come in once the order is placed. Installation adds another 2 to 4 weeks, plus a buffer for whatever shows up once the walls open.

Start the conversation in August and Thanksgiving in the new kitchen is realistic. Wait until October and you're probably looking at spring instead.

Today the Church celebrates the Assumption of Mary, body and soul into heaven.

It's a feast about the dignity of the body and the promise that this life isn't the end of the story. A good reminder in the middle of ordinary August errands, ordinary rooms, ordinary days.

The screened porch can be one of your most-used rooms.

A grill built into the counter, not a freestanding one wheeled out from the garage. Storage underneath for tools, cushions, and everything that usually clutters a patio table. A beverage fridge so nobody's running inside for ice. Counter space on both sides of the grill for plates going out and empty ones coming back.

If you've been thinking about adding a porch or finishing the one you have, this is the month to plan.

August means backpacks by the door again, and most entryways aren't ready for it.

A mudroom earns its keep in the six weeks before school starts. Hooks at kid height for backpacks and coats. A bench with shoe storage underneath so cleats and sneakers stop landing in a pile. Cubbies, one per kid, so nothing gets lost between the door and the kitchen.

It's a small space with an outsized effect on the rest of the house. Everything has a landing spot before it reaches the counter.

Two cabinet colors in one kitchen makes a room feel designed instead of default.

Pick one color for the island and a second for the perimeter cabinets, not scattered around the room. A navy or deep green island next to white or cream perimeter cabinets gives the eye a place to land. Match the hardware finish across both and the two colors read as one plan.

It solves a practical problem too. An all white kitchen shows every fingerprint on the surface that gets touched the most. A darker island hides it.
