Most people see pictures of the Ark…
but it’s not until you stand inside it that it really hits you.
Standing next to these columns, you realize how massive everything actually is.
And as a builder, that changes how you think about it.
Because it’s one thing to design something this big…
it’s another thing to actually build it.

At this scale, everything becomes harder.
Handling materials
Keeping everything aligned
Repeating the same layout over and over without error

Even the smallest details matter more than you think.

I saw a breakdown of how many fasteners were used throughout the Ark…
thousands of connections, pieces most people would never notice.

And that stood out to me.
Because something this big doesn’t hold together
just because of the large beams and columns…
It holds together because every single piece
big or small
is doing its job.

And it made me think about how Romans chapter 12 talks about how each of us has a different role.

If your gift is to teach, then teach.
If it’s to serve, then serve.
If it’s to give, then give generously.

Because in The Kingdom, just like in a structure like this…
Even the smallest piece matters.
It might not be seen
It might not feel significant
But without it…
the whole thing doesn’t work the way it was designed to.

Most people walk through the Ark and look around… A craftsman looks up.

What stood out to me wasn’t just the size of the Ark, but the structure holding everything together.
These massive vertical columns and horizontal beams are doing the real work.

From a builder’s perspective, you’re looking at:
Large solid timber columns
Heavy overhead beams carrying thousands of pounds
Load transfer across multiple levels
Framing designed to support not just weight, but movement.

And that’s something most people don’t think about.
A structure like this wouldn’t just need to hold static weight.
It would have to handle shifting loads, movement, and stress over time.

That means every beam, every joint, every connection matters. This is the part you don’t see…
but it’s the part that makes everything else possible.

Most people notice the finish first.
The clean lines, the details, how it looks.
But what actually determines if it lasts
is the structure underneath.
If the framing is off,
if the load isn’t carried right,
if the connections aren’t solid…
It doesn’t matter how good it looks.
It won’t hold up.

So don’t underestimate the process…the wilderness, the building season. What God is building in you now
is what will determine how you stand in the storm.
He’s not just building something strong or for looks…
He’s building something that lasts.

During spring break my family and I visited the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, Kentucky.
As a craftsman and woodworker, I couldn’t help but think about the scale of what we were looking at. Walking through the Ark made me wonder… what would something like this cost to build today using modern materials and labor?
But beyond the engineering and craftsmanship, it also reminded me of something deeper. Scripture shows us that skill and craftsmanship are gifts from God.

In Exodus, God gives people wisdom and skill to build for His purposes. The same was true for Noah when God instructed him to build the Ark.
The Ark wasn’t just an impressive structure.
It was an act of obedience that God used to preserve life.

Over the next few posts, I’m going to break down what it might actually cost to build something like the Ark today—from a builder’s perspective.

First up: the doors of the Ark.

This door is probably around 18 to 20 feet tall and roughly 12 to 14 feet wide. Each side appears to be built from vertical planks framed with heavy structural members and reinforced with large forged strap hinges.
If someone asked me to build something like this today, here are some of the things that would go into the estimate:

-Large timber frame header beam
-Heavy plank constructed doors
-Custom forged hinges and hardware
-Structural framing strong enough to support the weight
-Labor to assemble and install something this size

A door like this could easily weigh several thousand pounds depending on the species of wood used.
A modern build estimate for something like this could realistically land somewhere around
$25,000 to $45,000+
And that’s just the door.
