It's getting Hot out There!
Here are some cooling strategies for your home during the summer:
Natural Ventilation -
Use your windows and screens during the cool times of the day.
Programmable Thermostat -
Setting your thermostat higher when you know you won't be home and programming it to start to cool down about an hour before you get home will have you walking into a comfortable home. Also make sure there are no lamps or appliances near your thermostat, as this will cause your AC to run when it doesn't need to.
Ceiling Fans -
Using a ceiling fan allows you to raise your thermostat a full 4 degrees without you or anyone noticing the difference. Fans cool people by creating a wind chill effect, they don't necessarily cool the room.
Landscaping and Shading your Home -
If you home has large trees around it, it will help to shade your home. Even trees that shade your windows would help.
Heat from your appliances -
Cooking often heats up your home, keep it light during the summer or better yet, cook outdoors! If you do cook indoors, make sure to use your range hood fan.
Window Treatments -
Use energy efficient drapes or curtains and keep them closed during the heat of the day.
Air Leaks -
Look for air leaks around doors and window and weatherstrip them.
Happy Summer!
