Have been wanting to start using some more traditional hand tools for projects for quite a while. Was able to get several vintage Stanley hand planes in used, but well-aged condition. Decided to refresh this WWII era English made Stanley #4. Got it all cleaned, freshened up and sharpened the blade. I’m pleased at how it turned out and it’s performance (as you can tell by the whisper thin shavings). I’ve got 6 more American made Stanley’s in different sizes and types to get to this same level and some are even WWI era, but a little rougher shape. Stay tuned for more updates in the near future.

Sent some Father’s Day gifts out for some clients this week. Three sets of matching knife and cutting board sets! Two sets had hammered Japanese Damascus blades. One set featured a padauk handle and the other a highly figured black walnut handle. The BIG board was 24” x 18” mesquite with maple and padauk accents and a matching mesquite handled hunting knife. Hope these lucky fellas get lots of use and enjoyment from their boards and knives.

In light of my recent opening of availability; I’m going to open up the work shop for Father’s Day cutting board and knife (or whatever else) gift orders. Let me know if you’re wanting something specific, otherwise I’m just going to be making stock “inventory.”

This was the Top Secret project I’ve had in the shop for the past few weeks. It was hard not to post process pictures of this one. Fairly simple and classic design using red oak cabinet-grade plywood; but all the real effort was in the custom mill work I made from a slab of red oak. The other trick was trying to hide all the fasteners to make it look as smooth/ seamless as possible. I also realized I need a bigger shop, as shuffling tools around a larger project gets old really fast. I hope the students and faculty of Nazareth Academy enjoy it for years to come.

Made good progress tonight on a very special project that’s in the shop right now. Milled some red oak “baseboards” with Roman ogee profile from a raw slab; and will finish all the custom red oak trim over the weekend. Hoping to have it all done by my self-imposed deadline of middle of next week. More pictures to come.

For those that have been following along on the build process for the “VIP” project, here it is. The “customer” took delivery of the table last night. Still have to finish the matching stools. Texas mesquite is great to work with and finishes beautifully. The “customers” were satisfied and already using it.
