In addition to our Bur Oak trees, we also plant a lot of eastern red cedars for instant wind breaks. We currently have a good variety of our oaks and cedar trees. We are happy to move cedars from our place or yours, as we don’t charge for the cedar trees, just the hourly rate of the spade. Let us know if we can help with any of your wind block needs.

As Spring approaches keep us in mind for your shade tree needs. We start our oaks from seedlings and allow them to acclimate to our sometimes severe western Kansas winds and native soil types. Our trees have spent the last 10-12 years growing and adjusting to this climate making them an easy low maintenance option for any landscape.

Happy New Year on this frosty morning.

As we move deeper into the fall season and draw closer to wintertime on the Great Plains and throughout the U.S., many of us have begun the process of winterizing. And the weather throughout the next week (in Southeastern Nebraska at least) will be optimal for getting outdoors and after some tasks! One of the most important things to remember as winter approaches is to ensure your plants are sufficiently watered! Yes, we are still talking about plant hydration!

Did you know a major culprit of winter damage in our plants is due to under-watering early in the season? Both deciduous plants and evergreens can suffer from winter desiccation, and insufficient irrigation in the fall and early winter can increase the possibility of damage as it may cause drought stress. Sarah Browning at the UN-L Extension Office suggests that when watering, we water the entire area underneath the tree's drip line at a minimum but further out if possible. Additionally, give woody landscape plants at least one deep soaking per month in November and December. To do so, moisten the soil to a depth of 12" to 18". If you don't have a probe, you can just as easily use a long screwdriver using this handy trick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrZNPaBtmtw

We are in the process of removing the remaining Black Walnut trees we have to make room for others. These trees are 10 years old and are ranging 6-8’ tall, these trees are would be great for anyone wanting to add to a deer and wildlife habitat area. These trees are not “Yard” quality trees. If anyone in the area is interested, the trees are free, cost will depend on time associated with our trees spade service.
