🪵 Lumber 101: What Do 2x4, 2x6 & 2x8 Actually Mean?

Ever wondered why a 2x4 isn’t actually 2 inches by 4 inches?

The numbers refer to the nominal size of the lumber—the dimensions of the board before it’s dried and surfaced. Once processed, the actual dimensions are smaller.

For example:

2x4 = approximately 1½" x 3½"
2x6 = approximately 1½" x 5½"
2x8 = approximately 1½" x 7¼"

So, when you’re looking at a set of plans or building materials, remember: the size you see on the label is the nominal size, not the actual measurement!
