October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Everyone's changing passwords and turning on two-factor.

Meanwhile, your front door has a user list too.

If you've got a smart lock or keypad, open the app right now. We'll wait. ⏳

Count the codes.

The dog walker from two summers ago. The contractor who finished the kitchen. The house sitter. The ex-roommate. Every one of them is a working key to your home until someone deletes it.

Here's the 5-minute fix most people never do: Delete every code that doesn't belong to someone who lives there right now. Change the master code if it's still the default or if more than one person knows it. Update the lock's firmware. Turn on two-factor for the app account. Then scroll the activity log. It's honestly the most interesting thing you'll read all week.

Your lock is a computer now. Treat it like one.

Go look at the inside of your front door.

Not the outside. The inside.

Is there a thumb turn? Good.

Is there a keyhole? That's a double-cylinder deadbolt. It needs a key to open from both sides.

People usually install them for a good reason, like a glass panel next to the door. But here's what nobody tells you: in a house fire, you may have less than two minutes to get out once the smoke alarm goes off. Now picture finding that key in the dark, in smoke, with your heart pounding.

A lock should keep people out. It should never keep you in.

It's Fire Prevention Week, so here's our honest take: if you have a double-cylinder deadbolt on a door your family would use to escape, let's talk. There are smarter ways to protect a glass panel than a lock that can trap you.
