Named for the Greek word for sun, Ílios reimagines a 1980s Southern California residence as a contemporary expression of Greek and Armenian heritage, shaped by light, proportion, material restraint, and an elliptical oculus that traces the movement of the sun throughout the day.

RuPaul’s ballroom is a spectacle by design.

A Dorothy Draper–inspired fireplace, a ceiling of monumental disco balls, and walls lined with photographic icons: Grace Jones, Billie Holiday, Eartha Kitt, Diana Ross. But despite the scale, this isn’t a space for the masses.

“I entertain on television, not at my house,” RuPaul explains. “When you live such a public life, you need boundaries.”

One of the most delightful surprises in designing RuPaul’s home: a petite powder room wrapped in custom de Gournay wallpaper—each gilded cameo a silhouette of RuPaul in one of his many wigs.

It’s a space that distills the spirit of the house itself: thoughtful, theatrical, and unapologetically personal. We loved working alongside and his interior design mastery to bring features like this to life.

“The house is a touchstone,” RuPaul said, “to remind me to inspire people to feel the magic that’s seemingly so elusive these days. It’s meant to be whimsical and fun. None of it is to be taken too seriously—except for love and kindness.”

“We were going to do more planting on the pool terrace, but Ru wanted to be able to roller-skate and dance.”

For the outdoor spaces at RuPaul’s Beverly Hills home, joy was the design brief. Working alongside , we reimagined the grounds as an extension of the home’s theatrical spirit—anchored in the legacy of Hollywood Regency landscapes but made for movement, leisure, and larger-than-life personality.

Inspired by the gardens of old Hollywood estates—think Robert Evans’ pool snapped by Slim Aarons—we focused on structure, proportion, and performance. We added a zellige-tiled spa to the pool, layered drought-tolerant plantings across the hillside, and preserved the terrace as a stage for whatever the moment calls for.

From dated to decadent.

What began as a lack-luster 1980s structure has been transformed into a statement-making Beverly Hills estate—recast with light, landscape, and layered detail. In close collaboration with and , HATCH led a design process rooted in rhythm, reverence, and reinvention.

Before sketching a single detail, we immersed ourselves in the legacy of Hollywood Regency icons like Paul Revere Williams, Dorothy Draper, and John Woolf—absorbing the scale, symmetry, and theatricality that defined the era. Those lessons informed every move: the modified mansard roof, the reconfigured colonnades, the layered neoclassical detailing.

One of our favorite additions? The Orangery (slide 5)—a refined indoor/outdoor space that nods to the cabana-style garden rooms of 1930s Hollywood estates. Traditionally wrapped in fabric, we reimagined this typology with painted finishes for a crisp, low-maintenance expression of classic glamour.

Just beyond, a black-and-white striped outdoor dining room (slide 1)—adorned with fruit trees, sculpted topiaries, and Elsie de Wolfe–inspired chairs—extends the palette of performance. “The stripe treatment is meant to feel like a tent,” Bullard notes. “The room has orangery vibes, but technically it’s more of a kumquatery.”

The result is a one-of-a-kind home that captures the spirit of old Hollywood through a distinctly modern lens—tailored to the singular brilliance of .

In true RuPaul fashion, the living spaces are anything but restrained.
Lacquered finishes, neoclassical flourishes, and bold flashes of orange define the kitchen, breakfast room, office, and ultraluxe primary bedroom—where a velvet-clad, claw-foot daybed rests beneath a chandelier that channels Dorothy Draper at her most decadent.

As part of the transformation, we recast the complexion of the home by modifying the original mansard roof, reconfiguring railings and colonnades, and introducing a host of timeless neoclassical details. A layered, light-filled interior where old Hollywood glamour meets contemporary precision.
