From historic terra cotta block to modern CMU, and from traditional wood framing to metal bar joists, discover how different building systems come together and what it takes to renovate a structure built across multiple eras.

We’ve been hiring a lot lately.

It forced a harder question.

What kind of person actually fits at J.E. Charlotte?

We’ve had to get much clearer about that as our team has grown.

Experience is valuable, but it isn’t the first thing we look for. We’d rather find someone who fits the culture, communicates well, builds relationships and wants to be part of the team.

We can teach construction.

It’s a lot harder to teach someone how to work with people, stay open-minded and approach the job the way we want our company represented.

That’s why we describe ourselves as a culture company.

The construction knowledge can grow. We want to start with the right person.

A contractor might call it success.

That doesn’t mean the client agrees.

Picture a project where something unexpected comes up.

The contractor sends a month-long delay notice, protects themselves contractually and eventually completes the job.

On paper, they can say they fulfilled the contract.

But the client still opened a month later than expected.

There are legitimate reasons for schedules and costs to change during construction. But our first response is to look for ways to work through the issue and keep the project moving.

Sometimes that means adjusting the plan. Sometimes it means finding another solution. The goal is to get as close as possible to what we told the client we would deliver.

For us, a successful project means more than a completed job.

What started 10 years ago has grown into so much more. Over the past decade, Oliver has poured his time, talent, dedication, and heart into JEC - helping shape not only the work we do, but the company and people behind it.

Before you hire a contractor, ask them one question.

“How will you tell me when something goes wrong?”

Because something probably will.

Construction projects have too many moving pieces to promise there will never be a problem. The better question is how those problems are communicated.

An owner should know where the project stands, what has changed, what it means for the schedule or budget, and what the plan is to address it.

When we have to bring a client a problem, we try to bring a solution with it.

The construction industry has a reputation for projects going over budget, running late and surprising clients. That expectation didn’t come from nowhere.

The goal isn’t to promise a perfect project. It’s to keep the owner informed, be upfront when something changes and have a plan for what happens next.

That makes for a much better working relationship between the contractor and the client.
