I really like this combo — ‘Onyx and Pearls’ Penstemon (Penstemon digitalis ‘Onyx and Pearls’) with Mexican fleabane (Erigeron karvinskianus ‘Profusion’).

The dark purple penstemon foliage is such a good backdrop for all those loose little white and pink daisies. Both handle summer dry well and flower for a long period, but the foliage holds interest even when they’re not flowering.

Just got back from a family camping trip to the coast (more pics incoming). I was completely enthralled with this seaside bluff just below the Kalaloch Lodge. An I ncredible palette of grasses, rushes, shrubs and wind-tortured trees growing out of a crumbling bluff.

A few plants that especially wowed me:

Small-fruited bulrush — Scirpus microcarpus
Rush — Juncus sp.
Twinberry — Lonicera involucrata
Prairie junegrass — Koeleria macrantha
Fescue — Festuca sp.
Sitka spruce — Picea sitchensis

The small-fruited bulrush in particular was beautiful and surprising, mixed through the finer grasses and rushes.

I love this palette—the straw, olive, deep green and rusty brown; fine grasses against big rushes. Even the horsetail and big vetch.

I won’t say I’m sorry for replicating some of this in gardens I design!

One of my favorite trees to prune- this majestic scotch pine in Seattle. I climb up into the top layer and carefully prune it back into a stylized shape. It’s been pruned this way for decades.

And of course, photos from Cistus Nursery ! A really nice recently developed shaded part of the garden with a variegated dogwood, Sean giving a garden tour and cracking jokes, arcto ‘Bate’s Yellow’, Rhamnus ‘Hayfork Strain’, and flowering Myrtus ‘Ann McDonald’.
