Customer contacted me early this morning after losing all the keys to her 2021 GMC Yukon.
I looked up the keys, thinking it was one of the older versions of the newer models. Unfortunately, it wasn’t. This is one of GM’s newer-generation vehicles with a much more advanced theft-deterrent and immobilizer system designed to make unauthorized key programming and vehicle theft more difficult.
When all keys are lost on these, it’s not as simple as cutting a key and programming one fob. The vehicle requires the proper security procedure and equipment to add the new remotes to the immobilizer system. In this case, I have to program two new key fobs for the vehicle to be properly set up and operational, along with using the specialized equipment and cable required to communicate with the vehicle through the OBD-II port.
I quoted the customer $600 for two key fobs and programming.
She told me, “That’s crazy.”
I said, “Okay, thank you!” 😂
So far, I’m the only locksmith in the area equipped to handle these newer Yukons. Now I’m curious how much the dealership is going to charge… 🤔😂
Sometimes that $600 locksmith bill doesn’t sound quite so crazy after you get the dealer’s price! 🔑🚙
