On this project, we recently finished grading the roadways, getting them ready for the paving crew. We are now working on cutting out the areas for the sidewalks.

Progress on this project slowed earlier this summer due to frequent rainstorms, but things are moving along nicely now. August is certainly making up for all that rain by keeping things hot and dry 🔅!

If you are familiar with the horse world, then you know that arena dirt is super important to ensure equine athletes and livestock stay safe.

Recently, we overhauled a roping arena by stabilizing the subgrade so that the arena sand stays in place and provides proper footing for the horses and cattle.

Establishing safe, sound operating procedures is integral in the construction industry. One such procedure is the important step of calling 811 before beginning any excavation project.

811 is a free, national hotline that anyone can call to determine whether underground utilities are present in a particular area.

Since today is 8/11, it's the perfect day to remind everyone to call 811 before digging!

We spent this weekend with our team members and their families at our annual Summer Team Appreciation Gathering where we had the privilege of honoring and thanking our team for their years of service.

We have team members that have been with us for less than a year all the way up to 14 consecutive years! We are so thankful for each of them and for the hard working and dedicated team that we have.

How have heavy equipment and the construction industry changed over the years in the US?

Even in just the last couple of decades, construction has evolved tremendously. But we'll start by going back a little further. A couple of centuries ago, construction was performed mainly by manual labor. Then came the introduction of the first heavy equipment machines, powered by steam engines. As years passed, steam engines were replaced by combustible engines. Along the way, hydraulic systems and tracks were introduced to heavy machinery. Now, as we look around the modern day construction site, we find numerous profound technological advancements: drones capturing project data that is turned into digital models, heavy machinery equipped with GPS machine control, and sometimes even artificial intelligence being utilized to assess risks and aid decision-making.

As we consider all this change, one thing remains true: even as tools, machines, and technology advance, the construction industry is supported by the hard-working people who run the tools, machines, and technology!

For the next stop on our July journey through American construction history, we are exploring the impacts of the Industrial Revolution on the industry.

Primarily during the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution introduced new and improved manufacturing methods in America. Processes formerly done by hand or with animals were now performed by new machines and technology, drastically improving efficiency and production across many industries. Specifically for the construction industry, economic growth created a need for new construction, while manufacturing advancements provided the industry with improved, mass-producible materials (such as steel).

The construction industry benefitted and grew from the Industrial Revolution, but the Revolution also relied on construction. As the nation urbanized and required new roadways and buildings, construction provided the necessary infrastructure to sustain national growth and the Revolution's advancements.

Did you know that the first piece of heavy construction equipment in the U.S. was introduced in the 1830's?

William Otis invented and patented the Steam Shovel, which was the first recorded piece of heavy machinery in America and the first mechanical excavator in the world. The Steam Shovel was powered by a steam engine and had a large bucket to dig and move dirt. Previously, all excavation was performed by manual labor. This new machine therefore drastically improved production and efficiency on construction projects.

The Steam Shovel was utilized primarily in railroad construction and other mass excavation projects and was notably used in the construction of the Panama Canal.

We would like to wish a Happy Work Anniversary to Jessus Flores!

Jesus has been a valued member of our team for 5 years. He first joined our team as a labor hand and is now a rough grade equipment operator!

When asked about his career in construction, he shared: “The thing I enjoy the most about construction is that we always learn something new with every job site we complete.”

We are grateful to have Jessus on our team!
