This month, we’re recognizing the impact of Black pioneers who have shaped the landscaping and outdoor design industry. Their contributions continue to inspire and influence the way we experience outdoor spaces today.

David Augustus Williston – The first professionally trained Black landscape architect in the U.S., Williston designed landscapes for historically Black colleges and universities, including Tuskegee University, shaping the way these campuses look today.

Walter Hood – A visionary landscape architect and artist, Hood is known for his work in urban spaces that blend history, culture, and community. His designs, such as the International African American Museum landscape, bring storytelling and sustainability together in powerful ways.

Kona Gray – A modern leader in landscape architecture, Gray has worked on global projects emphasizing cultural storytelling, sustainability, and community-driven design, leaving a lasting impact on urban and resort spaces worldwide.

These leaders—and many others—have transformed outdoor living and continue to inspire the future of landscape design.

Winter can be tough on your hardscapes, but with a little care, you can protect your patio, driveway, walkways, and deck from the freeze-thaw cycle.

Tip: Seal, Sweep, and Maintain Start by sealing your pavers and deck (if you haven’t already). A sealer helps protect against the harsh winter elements, reducing the chance of damage. Don’t forget to regularly sweep away leaves and debris from your patio and walkways to prevent stains and water buildup. If snow falls, remove it promptly using a soft bristle broom or plastic shovel to avoid ice buildup and cracking. And, if ice forms, skip the salt—opt for a safer ice melt to keep your hardscapes in great shape all season.

Taking these steps now will ensure your outdoor spaces are ready to shine when spring arrives!
