This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we’re honored to support the Gichigamiin Indigenous Nations Museum in Evanston by loaning our model of the Jigzibik Apartments, Chicago’s first Indigenous-inclusive housing and cultural center, to their exhibition Indigenous Chicago, which opened this month.
 
The exhibition explores Native life in Chicago, including the decades-long fight for affordable housing. It’s a history we’re proud to be a small part of, and a reminder that the best buildings come from listening to and designing alongside the communities who will call them home.
 
In honor of the holiday, the museum is free today, with special programming all day. Stop by, see the exhibit, and learn more about the Native communities who have always been part of Chicago’s story.

Canopy’s studio will be a new site in this year’s Open House Chicago, hosted by the Chicago Architecture Center on October 17-18. This free public festival celebrates the cities architecture, culture, and community - and we are excited to be part of it!

We are pleased to announce that Encuentro Square — a 100% affordable housing development in the Logan Square neighborhood, has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 AIA Chicago Award for Design Excellence. Our firm Canopy served as both Master Planner and Building Design Architect, with an emphasis on cultural expression and trauma-informed design at both the planning and architectural scales.

Thank you to The American Institute of Architects, Chicago and the awards jury for this honor, and congratulations to all of this year’s awardees.

Voting is now open for the The American Institute of Architects, Chicago Lerch Bate’s People’s Choice Awards! We are so proud to share that Encuentro Square is a finalist in the Affordable Housing category!
Encuentro Square reclaims a former industrial site at the western end of the 606, anchoring 89 permanently affordable housing units in Logan Square. Its vibrancy reflects the monarch butterfly, a symbol of resilience and beauty for the community involved in shaping the program.

A New LGTBQ+ transitional living facility for youth is fully underway! This project will provide housing alternatives and supportive programs for LGTBQ at risk youth. On Thursday, we had the joy of leading a tour of the Jigzibik building before Eco Achievers annual Solstice Party!

Located on Irving Park, Jigzibik, “at the rivers edge” is a new affordable development for urban Native American populations, targeted for completion later this year.

A huge thank you to co-developers Full Circle and Visionary Ventures, and to the talented team at Skender for building something truly special. Watching this vision come to life, floor by floor, is amazing to see and to share with our A/E community.

To everyone who joined us for EcoAchievers’ Summer Solstice celebration — thank you for being part of this! Exciting to see this development come to life. It was wonderful to join the solstice party afterwards on the river (and watch Mexico play in world cup with the team!!) ☀️
