About the artist:
Art communicates messages that are sometimes difficult to convey in words. Through pet portraits, I strive to capture the unique qualities of my client’s pets – eyes, expressions, personalities and the essential elements that assemble the messages that only your pet sends into the world. There were two constants in my early life: my love of art and the presence of animals (there were always dogs and cats jumping onto and off my lap. As I grew into adulthood, I didn’t spend as much time on my fine art as I did in my childhood but always made sure my life included beloved pets in the house. As my work in fine art resurfaced a few years ago, I recognized the emergence of a natural extension to animals as subjects for my work, whether in still-life or landscape compositions. When I began working in the medium of colored pencils, I was astounded by the details I could capture in the animals fur. The dynamics in colored pencils allows me to capture a full spectrum of colors, shades and values to your pets’ unique features. On a chilly Thanksgiving eve, we very happily rescued a stray doodle from a Town Pound and brought him home, naming him Tucker. His sweet eyes were a clear window into his tentative, hopeful spirit. though he was nervous around other dogs. We had to keep Tucker separate from our other two dogs, in our family room downstairs. During this time, I began making sketches of him. To cover his substantial early medical costs, I decided to sell those early portrait sketches to help raise a little money and that is where this started. In my art studies, I’ve been working in the style of Realism through The Ani Art Academy Waichulis program, ‘The Language of Drawing’ and I’m nearing completion of a three-year Studio Arts Certificate at the Worcester Art Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts. My pet portrait commissions are generally booked out 6 to 8 weeks at a time: longer during the period prior to the Christmas holiday period. I enjoy creating these one of a kind, hand drawn pet portraits. Through the photos, notes and stories about an owner’s beloved pet, I feel that I begin to know the pet as well. The greatest joy for me is knowing how much the owners love their pet portraits, their words of thanks – whether in person, a hand-written note or an email mean so much to me. As an animal lover and a pet parent, I know how much these pets enrich our lives with their love, loyalty and friendship and I hope you’ll consider contacting me for a commission on your own pet portrait.
