HAIL DAMAGE ISN’T ALWAYS OBVIOUS. 🧊🏠
These photos are a great example of what hail damage can look like on a roofing system and other exterior components.
When hail strikes a roof, it can knock protective granules off asphalt shingles and create bruising or fractures in the shingle mat. Depending on the size of the hail, wind speed, roof age, and roofing material, some damage can be difficult to see from the ground.
Hail can also leave evidence on gutters, downspouts, vents, flashing, siding, window screens, and even solar panels. Over time, damaged roofing materials can become more vulnerable to weather exposure and potentially lead to leaks, damaged decking, insulation issues, and interior water damage.
What should you do after a hailstorm?
1. Have your roof professionally inspected. Hail damage isn’t always visible from the ground.
2. Document the damage. Photos and a detailed inspection can help establish the condition of the roof and other affected exterior components.
3. Review your homeowners policy. Hail is commonly a covered cause of loss, but coverage, deductibles, exclusions, and claim requirements vary by policy.
4. If warranted, contact your insurance carrier. We can provide documentation of the observed damage and work with you through the restoration process.
5. Address damaged areas before they become bigger problems. Waiting until you notice an interior leak could mean additional damage has already occurred.
If your area recently experienced hail, don’t wait for a ceiling leak to find out there’s a problem. A professional inspection can give you a much better understanding of your roof’s condition.
