5 LAYERS OF SHINGLES?! 🤯🏠
We are out on a roof replacement today, and because our crew at Integrity First Roofing & Construction always strips every roof all the way down to the bare wood decking to meet manufacturer specifications, we uncovered a massive shortcut from the past: FIVE layers of old shingles stacked on top of each other.
Why is a "layover" a disaster waiting to happen—and why do we insist on stripping every roof down to the bare wood decking?
🔨 Structural Overload: One layer of asphalt shingles weighs roughly 200–350 lbs per square (100 sq. ft.). Five layers put thousands of pounds of unnecessary dead weight on your home’s trusses and framing.
🔨 Hidden Rot & Decking Damage: You can’t fix what you can’t see. Until you strip it down to the bare wood, there is zero way to spot rotted, delaminated, or water-damaged OSB/plywood that needs replacing.
🔨 Fastener Failure & Wind Blow-Offs: Roofing nails are engineered to bite directly into solid wood decking. When you nail over old shingles, nails can't pe*****te deep enough into the wood—meaning the next big Texas windstorm can rip the new roof right off.
🔨 Waterproofing & Underlayment: Ice and water shield and synthetic underlayments are designed to bond flat against clean wood. Slapping shingles over old, curled layers traps heat, bakes the new shingles from underneath, and creates pathways for leaks.
🔨 Code & Warranty Compliance: Building codes prohibit installing a new roof over two or more layers, and no manufacturer will honor a system warranty installed on top of five layers of old material.
As the name implies, we don't take shortcuts. We are tearing off every single one of those 5 layers, inspecting the wood decking underneath, and building this homeowner a rock-solid, code-compliant roofing system built to last. 💪
