Is it pretty? No.
Does it need more work? Yes.

I woke up this morning and felt that cusp of autumn air on my face and immediately knew today was the day the duck run gets “finished”.

They will eventually be able to fly out of this run and that’s okay. It’s meant to give them a safe place to sleep at night and give them access to the garden.

Their little poopy butts are going to provide a ton of fertilization through their water alone. They also have the big job of keeping bugs down in my garden.

Still no names for the other two. Any ideas for Pip’s siblings?

Garden clean up was very easy this year between the lack of rain and goats eating everything.

Their new electric fence box comes in tomorrow. They aren’t going to love being held in pasture again. I think I’ll miss the morning headbutts outside my bedroom window

I love an old timey recipe book. These came from our historical society museum where I teach an herb class once a month. It just goes to show the mountain people may have left the hills, but the hills never left us.

Root harvest!

Before the sweltering heat firmly fixed itself back into place this week I was able to get out and trim back some perennials and harvest some of our root plants before they disappear beneath the soil.

Pictured left to right:

☀️ Elecampane - a respiratory herb
🫚 Burdock - my digestive bitters heavy hitter
💤 Valerian - the most perfectly smelly sleep root.

These roots will be dried and used in various concoctions to support the immune system this fall.

Putting some final touches on the monograph and essay for tomorrow’s herb class at the Scott County Heritage Center & Museum!

This month we are going to discuss horehound. A bitter mint with a reputation for supporting a body when sick with a cough.

Its also perfect for ridding your home of demons 🤷‍♀️

Enid reminds us that there are many ways to soothe a weary nervous system after a long day. Some of us turn to rage-gardening or baking; others, like Enid, need a cozy shirt, a soft pillow, and a quiet afternoon on the couch.

All are valid.

Nervous system tending is a minute-by-minute practice. When the world feels too loud or too fast, we can anchor ourselves in small, steady ways—and herbs are always here to help.

I have a thoughtful collection of nervine support formulas in the shop now, with even more coming this fall.
