125 years of maritime history and Unalam is proud to be part of the next chapter! Unalam was proud to attend the 125th birthday celebration of Gazela Primeiro in Philadelphia. Built in Portugal in 1901, Gazela is one of the world’s oldest tall ships still sailing, with a history that includes nearly seven decades carrying fishermen across the North Atlantic before arriving in Philadelphia in 1971. Earlier this year, Unalam manufactured Gazela’s new main mast and bowsprit, helping preserve this remarkable vessel and adding another one-of-a-kind project to our storied history. With Unalam’s roots dating to 1892, this project connects two legacies built on craftsmanship and carried forward across generations. Congratulations to the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild, Gazela’s crew, and everyone helping keep her story alive. We are honored to contribute to her future. Happy 125th birthday, Gazela!

Let’s chat about delivering bridges! Unalam bridges are delivered in pieces for efficient shipping and straightforward installation in the field. Guard rails are attached at the plant to help save time during installation.

Once the bridge is assembled, crews can add an optional waterproofing membrane and asphalt wearing surface, completing the bridge for vehicle traffic.

Smart fabrication and thoughtful planning help make the installation process more efficient from the start.

These are three shorthand terms we use at Unalam to describe straight glulam members before any additional fabrication.

• DET (Double End Trim): The beam is cut square on both ends to a specified finished length.
• OEW (One End Wild): One end is cut square, while the other is left rough just as it came from the gluing process.
• BEW (Both Ends Wild): Neither end has been cut.

Beams with wild ends can help reduce fabrication costs and are often used when the final beam length won't be known until installation. Once a beam is cut in the field, it's important to apply end sealer right away to help protect the end grain from moisture.

It's all part of making sure each beam is ready for the job!

Throughout the 1970s and '80s, Unalam manufactured dozens of wooden hyperbolic paraboloid (HP) roofs. While looking through our archives, we came across this architectural case study featuring the Boston College Recreation Complex, one of the many projects completed during that era. While HP roofs are no longer part of what we manufacture today, they remain an interesting part of our history.

These roof panels were built with three layers of plywood glued and stapled together over custom forms in our factory, with a finished tongue-and-groove wood deck underneath. Even more impressive, the fully finished panels were shipped in 14-foot-wide sections, measured just 2-1/4 inches thick, and covered a clear span of more than 42,000 square feet.

The historic Warner Theatre has been entertaining audiences since 1931, and during its 2021 renovation to expand the backstage area and add a new rehearsal space, Unalam was proud to be involved.

Our team fabricated the curved glulam roof beams for the new rehearsal space, taking them from template to fabrication to the finished, wrapped product. It's always rewarding to see the craftsmanship that goes into every beam before it heads to the job site.

A busy week in the community for Unalam! Our Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Ian Van Cott, was invited to be the guest speaker at the Sidney Rotary Club. The gathering took place at the Lutheran church in Sidney—one of Unalam’s earliest glulam projects from the 1960s! It was a meaningful setting to share our company’s story and celebrate our longstanding ties to the community.

Unalam was also proud to be a Gold Sponsor of the Oneonta American Legion’s Legacy Chopper Run, honoring the lives lost and sacrifices made on September 11 as we marked its 25th anniversary. Three generations of the Van Cott family were present, including the seventh generation!

Recent years have seen a lot of research and tests on the fire performance of mass timber, particularly focused on CLT structures. But, the basics of reliable fire performance for large structural wood components have been understood for a long time now, as you can see from this AITC brochure from 24 years ago.

For the average person, it can be easy to think of “combustible” materials like wood being less safe than “Noncombustible” structural materials. Most buildings are full of combustible contents, so the key for safety is actually how the structural components perform in the heat of a fire.
