Tonight we switched gears and went from stump grinding to doing driveways!

There’s only one thing I might enjoy more than stump grinding, and that’s working on driveways. I love figuring out the slope, the angles, where the water is going to run, and what needs changed to get everything draining the way it should. Then you get to step back when it’s finished and see the instant results.

A freshly done driveway is like putting a brand-new set of rims and tires on a vehicle—it completely changes the look!

Trying to play catch-up this week!

Got home from my regular job, loaded up the mowers, and went and mowed. Got back in time to eat supper, and I told Jeremiah, “We’ve got time to go do a quick stump job.” So we loaded up the Kubota, went and knocked out a couple stumps, and got home at 9 p.m.

Feels like a full day! I love being able to work alongside my boys and teach them along the way.

Yesterday was a full day of getting caught up on some stump grinding jobs.

The first stop was a field that was absolutely loaded with stumps. We got that one knocked out, then headed down to Germania for two burned stumps. One of them was pretty much burned away except for the outside edge and the roots. Those roots ran 20 feet in every direction.

Pine trees never cease to amaze me with how shallow their root systems are and just how massive those runners can be.

A couple more jobs to finish up, but we’re making progress. As always, I really enjoy spending the day working alongside my boys. That’s the best part of it all.

Water is one of the most important things we need to survive. In fact, the human body is made up of about 60% water. But while water is essential for life, it can also be incredibly destructive.

All it takes is one small path of least resistance, and water will continue to follow that path, slowly eroding everything in its way.

After work tonight, I was able to help a customer with that exact problem. Her parking pad sits on a hill, and the drainage ditch along the road was directing water straight into the parking area.

I built up the parking pad and regraded it with the proper slope to encourage the water to run back toward the roadside ditch instead of pooling where she parks. It may seem like a small change, but proper grading can make a huge difference in preventing erosion and keeping water where it belongs.

The third and final job of the day!

This one was a large pine stump with a massive root system, along with three smaller stumps. The stump itself wasn’t too bad, but chasing all those roots took some serious time and effort. After that, we got everything cleaned up, leveled back out, and took care of the chips for the customer.

It was definitely a long day, but I’m proud of the boys. We left the house at 10:00 this morning and didn’t pull back into the driveway until 8:00 tonight. Days like this are a lot of work, but it’s rewarding to look back and see everything we accomplished.

Two fairly good-sized pine stumps taken care of and ground below grade. Pine stumps may look smaller on top, but their root systems can definitely keep you busy.

Job #1 for the day!

One massive stump, two large stumps, and one medium stump knocked out and ready for cleanup. Another customer one step closer to having their yard back.

It always amazes me what trees will grow around and absorb over the years. For example, that rock was dead center in one of these trees. Nature has a way of adapting and growing around just about anything.
