I

had two great mentors in my career. The first was my dad, George Patton Ballew. From a very early age he began teaching me about construction. He was a carpenter by trade, and over time he worked his way up to Project Superintendent. The photo to the left is me at age three on one of my dad’s school projects in Georgia. No, I was not working then; I was playing in the sand pile. I would walk from school to my dad’s construction site on the way home. I was 9 years old and I remember my dad teaching me about reading plans. During summer breaks in high school, I worked for my dad on his projects. My second mentor was Mr. George E. Jensen, owner of George E. Jensen Contractors, Inc. It was on his projects that I worked on during high school. Jensen had taken notice of me during those formative years and at the age of 21, he gave me my first supervision job. This was the start of my mentorship in government contracting under Mr. Jensen. That first project was a half-million-dollar renovation project of Building 15 at the US Public Health Service Hospital in Carville, LA. After several years and numerous projects, I was promoted and worked in the company’s home office in Mobile, AL. I will always be grateful for Mr. Jensen’s mentoring and the trust he placed in me.

Really pleased with my purchase. We have this Leica L6G laser. It has been a great tool. The beam is about as bright as you can get. You can team this up with a green laser detector and go long distances in sunshine. One problem however is the fine rotation adjustments. The factory fine adjustment is just too coarse at long distances. So, we picked up this remote controlled micro rotation adjustment mount. This will speed up the layout and make it a less frustrating process. Since it is remote controlled, a 2 man layout job can become a one man layout job.

How much fake can we take? Don’t believe these ads about allowing AI to calculate the cost of a potential project. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to have something that would save me the hours if not days of generating quantity survey, line item pricing, phone calls, speaking to vendors, and pursuing subcontractor bids.

Even when you think you have accounted for everything you then have to review crew productivity for your “current” crew and price labor accordingly. Then comes the application of indirect costs such as general liability and workers compensation insurance. Then comes the application of payroll taxes. Many of these things are unique to you and your situation. AI does not know your crew’s productivity or indirect cost rates.

Dealing with subcontractors is a job in itself. Your usual reliable subs might be busy and have to quote you higher, so you have to find others. What if a sub does not have workers compensation insurance, well as the GC you have to pay it, so that has to be added in.

Finally, after you see the figure that is your total cost without any profit or overhead for you, you think it’s too high. How can my customer pay that? So, you put your minimum fee you think you can live with because you need the job. You need the job not only for yourself but you need some work just to keep your key people, who are increasingly hard to find. Does AI know how little you are safely willing to take, NO!

As a contractor I would never rely on an AI bid for any portion of a project, and neither should you the customer rely on it.

We sometimes do employ AI to turn our 3D models into a more photo realistic image, but even that often takes many attempts as it tends to make mistakes.

All of our projects are first built with 3D Modeling and that is used to generate highly accurate quantities, which we competitively price. We do this for our clients as well to assure we are all in agreement with what is to be built. We do it so they can visualize their project and we can eliminate any issues. All that happens before your get your hard dollar bid for your project.

Concrete is going to crack—there’s no stopping that. The goal is to control where it cracks. That’s where saw-cut control joints come in. By cutting planned joints at the right spacing and depth, we create a “weak line” that encourages the concrete to crack neatly where we want it—instead of randomly across the slab. Clean, controlled, and professional.

Very pleased with the work of our concrete subcontractor ASG Concrete Solutions, LLC. We flooded the slab after the pour and it was in tolerance and had a smooth finish. This is our own garage/shop and, we used 3D computer modeling to design the structure as we do for all our clients. We would be pleased to help you realize your home improvement dream using our method. It is a unique approach to building.

I have to give a big shout out to ASC Concrete Solutions LLC for a great job. They showed up and conquered the placing and finishing of the main slab. Reasonable pricing, excellent work. We would use them again.

A must have, rebar cutter/bender. It easily bends #5 bars and smaller. It makes very sharp bends. It is ideal for small foundations that do not have a lot of rebar. For larger projects we would order it pre-bent from a rebar fabricator.

Batter Boards:

Not prehistoric sporting equipment—these are one of the most reliable tools in construction for precise building layout.

Batter boards create a stable framework for establishing building lines and elevation/grade before excavation begins. By setting them back from the footprint and above the finished floor—often about 1” for slab-on-grade or higher for other foundation types—we preserve critical layout control even after the ground is disturbed.

From these boards, we run string lines that define the exact location of the structure. Accuracy here is everything—if the layout is off, everything that follows is off.

We’ve also developed our own string-line helper, which allows us to set forms precisely to the line while keeping the string clear and undisturbed. It’s a small innovation that improves both accuracy and efficiency.

On larger commercial and public works projects, layout is often done with a Total Station surveying system—a highly advanced 3D system that stores and locates building points with extreme precision.

We’ve worked with both methods. Whether it’s proven field techniques like batter boards or advanced digital layout systems, the goal is the same:

Get it right from the start.
