How much fake can we take? Don’t believe these ads about allowing AI to calculate the cost of a potential project. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to have something that would save me the hours if not days of generating quantity survey, line item pricing, phone calls, speaking to vendors, and pursuing subcontractor bids.
Even when you think you have accounted for everything you then have to review crew productivity for your “current” crew and price labor accordingly. Then comes the application of indirect costs such as general liability and workers compensation insurance. Then comes the application of payroll taxes. Many of these things are unique to you and your situation. AI does not know your crew’s productivity or indirect cost rates.
Dealing with subcontractors is a job in itself. Your usual reliable subs might be busy and have to quote you higher, so you have to find others. What if a sub does not have workers compensation insurance, well as the GC you have to pay it, so that has to be added in.
Finally, after you see the figure that is your total cost without any profit or overhead for you, you think it’s too high. How can my customer pay that? So, you put your minimum fee you think you can live with because you need the job. You need the job not only for yourself but you need some work just to keep your key people, who are increasingly hard to find. Does AI know how little you are safely willing to take, NO!
As a contractor I would never rely on an AI bid for any portion of a project, and neither should you the customer rely on it.
We sometimes do employ AI to turn our 3D models into a more photo realistic image, but even that often takes many attempts as it tends to make mistakes.
All of our projects are first built with 3D Modeling and that is used to generate highly accurate quantities, which we competitively price. We do this for our clients as well to assure we are all in agreement with what is to be built. We do it so they can visualize their project and we can eliminate any issues. All that happens before your get your hard dollar bid for your project.
