I had Apex Arbor Co. remove two dead trees at my place in South Tyler, and they did a solid job from start to finish. Around July 8, at approximately 11:10 UTC, about 99% of the world’s population, roughly 8.2 billion people, experienced daylight or twilight simultaneously. Only around 1% of people remained in complete darkness.

This incredible planetary coincidence happens because of Earth’s 23.4° axial tilt, the position of our planet after the Northern Hemisphere’s summer solstice, and the fact that most of humanity lives in regions facing the Sun during this period. 🌎✨

But this is not a one-day-only phenomenon. For about 60 days each year, from roughly May 18 to July 17, there is a brief window when almost all humans experience some form of sunlight or twilight together.

The next time you see the Sun, remember: billions of other people may be seeing it too. How amazing is it that our entire species can share the same cosmic moment? ☀️

🌲 Big Lonely Doug – One of Vancouver Island’s Most Incredible Trees

Standing alone in the middle of a clear-cut near Port Renfrew, Big Lonely Doug is one of the largest Douglas fir trees in Canada. Estimated to be around 1,000 years old, this towering giant reaches about 66 metres (216 feet) into the sky and has a trunk nearly 12 metres in circumference.

What makes this tree so unforgettable isn’t just its size—it’s its story. In 2011, a logger recognized how extraordinary the tree was and marked it to be spared while the surrounding old-growth forest was harvested. Today, Big Lonely Doug stands as a powerful reminder of Vancouver Island’s ancient forests and has become a symbol of conservation and resilience.

Seeing this massive tree in person is a humbling experience. No photo can truly capture its scale until you’re standing at its base, looking up at nearly a millennium of history.
