A dying tree doesn't always go down all at once. Usually there are warning signs that show up months or years before a failure, and most of them are visible to any homeowner who knows what to look for. Now is a good time to check, because a tree's response to the new growing season tells you a lot about what's happening underneath the surface.

The five signs worth watching are: no new growth or severely delayed leafing-out when the trees around it are fully leafed; large sections of bare branches or dead wood scattered through the canopy; bark that's peeling, cracking, or falling away in pieces without regrowth underneath; fungal growth at the base, including shelf fungi, mushrooms, or white stringy growth at the root collar; and a trunk that sounds hollow when you knock on it, particularly in combination with any of the other signs above.

One or two of these on their own doesn't always mean removal is necessary. Some are treatable; some indicate a tree in structural decline that still has years left in it. But multiple signs together, or any sign that comes with visible structural concerns, means it's worth having a professional take a look before storm season puts load on a compromised tree.

When Clear Cutters launched in 2023, it started with a straightforward mission: protect, restore, and beautify East Texas. That's not a slogan on a truck. It's the actual reason the company exists.

East Texas has a distinct character. The land matters here. The trees, the pines, the pastures, and the backyards of Tyler and Kilgore and Longview are part of what makes this place worth taking care of. Clear Cutters isn't a franchise crew passing through for storm season work. It's a family-owned business based here, operating here, and invested in the communities it serves.

That shows up in how jobs are handled: honest pricing before work begins, clear communication about what's being done and why, and a crew that treats your property the way they'd want someone to treat theirs. No guesswork, no gimmicks.

East Texas has enough fly-by-night outfits after every storm. Clear Cutters is the alternative. Call 903-805-9619 or visit clearcutterstx.com to schedule.

When it comes to hiring local businesses, what matters most to you: price, reputation, how long they've been around, or something else?

When most people think about tree trimming, they picture a general cleanup: take off the low branches, shape things up a bit, leave it looking neater. Selective pruning is a more deliberate approach, and the difference shows up in how the tree performs over the next several years.

Selective pruning means choosing specific branches to remove based on what the tree actually needs, rather than just what looks overgrown. That includes removing dead, dying, or crossing branches that create friction and wounds, thinning the canopy to reduce wind load before storm season, eliminating branches that are growing toward structures or utility lines, and prioritizing the tree's long-term structure over short-term aesthetics.

Done correctly, selective pruning doesn't make a tree look heavily cut. It looks natural, because the cuts are made at natural branch unions and the tree's shape isn't fundamentally altered. What changes is the internal structure: better airflow through the canopy, fewer points where disease can enter, and a tree that's more likely to stay standing through a summer storm in the Tyler or Kilgore area.

Clear Cutters uses selective pruning techniques on all our trimming work. Our post on what selective pruning actually involves is linked in the comments. Call 903-805-9619 or visit clearcutterstx.com for a straight estimate on pruning or trimming.

Have you ever had a tree crew come out and felt like they took too much off, or not enough? What happened after?

East Texas's most active thunderstorm season runs from mid-spring through summer, and it typically arrives with very little warning. A line of storms can move through Tyler, Kilgore, or Longview on a Tuesday afternoon and leave behind a very different property than you started the day with.

The best time to deal with at-risk trees is before that happens, not after. A few things worth checking right now: large dead or hanging branches in the canopy, limbs that cross over your roof or power lines, any trees that seem to be leaning more than they were before, and soft or spongy root zones at the base of large trees, which can indicate decay that affects stability.

You don't need to be a professional to do a basic walk-around. If something looks off, or if you're not sure, that's the right time to have a professional take a look. Catching a weak tree before a storm is significantly less expensive and stressful than handling a damaged roof or downed fence line after one.

Clear Cutters provides storm-prep assessments and removal across East Texas. Upfront pricing, no guesswork. Call 903-805-9619 or visit clearcutterstx.com to schedule.

Did any trees on your property take damage in last year's storms, and have you gotten eyes on them since?

If you have overgrown land in East Texas that needs clearing, forestry mulching is one of the most efficient and soil-friendly ways to handle it. One machine grinds brush, underbrush, small trees, and invasive vegetation directly into a layer of fine mulch on the ground. No burning. No hauling. No piles left behind.

What makes it particularly well-suited to East Texas is how the finished mulch behaves. Instead of stripping the soil surface bare and leaving it exposed to erosion, the mulched material stays in place and breaks down over time, returning nutrients to the soil. For properties preparing for grazing, planting, or recreational use, that matters.

Forestry mulching also works faster than conventional clearing in most situations. Land that would take days of hand-clearing or multiple equipment types can often be processed in a fraction of the time. For acreage in the Tyler, Longview, Kilgore, and Lindale area, that efficiency translates directly into cost savings.

Clear Cutters offers forestry mulching as part of our full-service lineup. If you've got land that needs clearing this season, call us at 903-805-9619 or visit clearcutterstx.com for an upfront, no-guesswork estimate.

One of the most common misconceptions about trees is that branches rise as the tree grows taller. The assumption usually goes something like this: that swing set hanging from a branch at 8 feet will eventually end up at 12 feet as the tree gets bigger. It doesn't work that way.

Branches grow outward from their fixed point on the trunk. New height in a tree comes from terminal buds at the top of the canopy pushing upward. The branch that was 8 feet off the ground when you hung that swing is still at 8 feet ten years later, even if the tree is now significantly taller overall. What does change is the branch's diameter and weight, which is part of why older lower branches on large trees can become structural concerns over time.

This is one of those tree facts that surprises a lot of homeowners, and it matters practically. If you're planning structures around trees, installing fencing near root zones, or deciding where to plant a new tree relative to your property, understanding how trees actually grow helps you make decisions you won't regret later. East Texas has a lot of pine trees, and right now many of them are carrying stress from last season into this one. Drought conditions reduce a pine's ability to produce the resin it uses as a natural defense against bark beetles. When that defense is down, beetle populations that might normally do limited damage can attack and kill a weakened tree quickly.

The signs to look for: reddish-brown or yellowing needles that stay on the tree rather than dropping (a sign of rapid death rather than normal needle shed), pitch tubes on the bark that look like small globs of sap mixed with boring dust, and a transition from green to yellow-brown that starts at the top of the tree and moves downward. Trees in that condition almost never recover.

The important thing about pine beetle damage is that quick removal protects the trees around the affected one. Active infestations can spread to neighboring pines, so a tree that's already past saving is better addressed promptly. If you've got longleaf, loblolly, or shortleaf pines in Tyler, Kilgore, Lindale, or anywhere in East Texas that look off, it's worth a look before the problem spreads further. Call 903-805-9619 or visit clearcutterstx.com for a free estimate. Have you noticed any of your pines looking different this spring compared to last year?

Severe weather is targeting East Texas today through Thursday, May 8. Tyler, Longview, and the surrounding area sit squarely in the flash flooding corridor that forecasters are tracking, with heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and isolated tornadoes expected beginning this afternoon.

East Texas soil saturates quickly after extended rain, and saturated ground means root systems lose their grip. Trees that look solid today can become hazards overnight, especially those growing near structures or over vehicles.

Clear Cutters is ready to respond. We serve Tyler, Bullard, Kilgore, Lindale, Longview, and Whitehouse with emergency tree service and storm damage cleanup. If a tree comes down on your property, call us before you attempt to move anything.

No guesswork, no gimmicks, just a straight assessment and a free estimate. Call 903-805-9619 or reach us at clearcutterstx.com. Have you had storm damage in East Texas before that caught you off guard? What was the first thing you noticed when you went outside afterward?
