π STOP! Before you drag that sprinkler out again, read this. π
Did you know that overwatering your lawn can be just as deadly as underwatering it? When you drown your grass, you choke out the roots, invite nasty fungus, and ruin any chance of a deep root system surviving a harsh summer.
But if you don't water enough? Your grass will literally burn, turn brown, and die right under the sun. βοΈ
Getting a vibrant, healthy lawn is all about that Goldilocks "just right" sweet spot. Because the weather changes constantly, your watering routine has to change too. You really have to keep an eye on it daily.
To make it easy for you, Iβve broken everything down into this one, all-inclusive seasonal guide.

βοΈ The Big Picture: Optimal hydration is a balancing act. Overwatering triggers root rot, fungus, and disease, while underwatering causes drought stress, yellowing, and severe sun burn. Daily observation is the secret weapon.
π± SPRING (The Wake-Up Call)
Goal: Stimulate new growth and encourage early, deep root development.
- Too Much Rain: DO NOT WATER. Saturated soil will suffocate and kill young, developing roots while breeding disease.
- Not Enough Rain: Water 1-2x weekly. Deep watering encourages those roots to dig down deep before the heat hits.
π₯ SUMMER (The Survival Zone)
Goal: Survive intense heat and blistering sun.
- Too Much Rain: Skip 2-3 days after a heavy rain. Let the soil drain completely before you even think about watering again.
- Not Enough Rain: Water 3x weekly. Provide roughly 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week. EARLY MORNING ONLY (4 AM - 8 AM) so the sun doesn't evaporate it all.
π AUTUMN (Recovery Phase)
Goal: Recover from summer stress and store energy for winter.
- Too Much Rain: Reduce frequency / Turn off timers. Evaporation slows way down in the fall. Let natural rain do the heavy lifting so your soil isn't soggy heading into winter.
- Not Enough Rain: Water 1x weekly. Keep up with a deep weekly watering until the ground officially begins to freeze.
π DAILY CHECK PRO-TIPS: How to read your lawn
- Too Much Water Signs: Mushrooms or fungus popping up, ground feels squishy/muddy hours after watering, or grass blades turn yellow and limp.
- Not Enough Water Signs: Footprints stay flattened when you walk on it (the grass doesn't bounce back), a dull blue-gray tint to the color, or itβs incredibly difficult to push a screwdriver into the soil.
