Dragonflies may look delicate, but they are remarkably efficient aerial predators.

Unlike animals that chase their prey from behind, dragonflies can intercept moving targets by adjusting their flight path to where the prey is going.

This ability comes from an impressive combination of vision, flight control and a nervous system capable of processing movement extremely quickly.

Their huge compound eyes give dragonflies a broad field of view, helping them detect and track other insects while flying. Their four wings can operate with considerable independence, allowing them to hover, turn sharply, accelerate and even fly backward.

Once a dragonfly gets close enough, its legs form a basket-like structure that helps trap the insect in midair. The prey can then be carried and eaten while the dragonfly continues flying.

Studies of dragonfly hunting behavior have found remarkably high capture success in some species and situations, although the often-repeated claim that dragonflies have a universal 95% hunting success rate should be treated cautiously because success varies by species, prey and experimental conditions.

What makes dragonflies especially fascinating is that their hunting isn't simply about speed.

They are constantly processing the movement of another flying animal and adjusting their own trajectory accordingly.

That makes the dragonfly a fascinating example of how evolution can turn a small insect into a highly specialized aerial predator.

For an animal that spends much of its life looking almost weightless as it glides over ponds and wetlands, the dragonfly is carrying some seriously advanced hunting technology.
