Copied from a fellow surveyor but it sums up our career.
Some days I feel torn.
I love this work. There’s nothing like stepping off the beaten path, cutting line through the brush, and standing in the quiet of the woods. Surveying puts me in places most folks never get to see. Out here it’s just me, my tools, and the land.
But here’s the part I wrestle with. So much of what we do turns into parking lots, strip malls, and subdivisions. We take God’s creation, the raw beauty of it, and box it up into concrete and asphalt.
I’m proud to provide for my family and to play a part in projects that help communities grow. But I never forget that before the roads and buildings, it was just land. Pure, wild, and full of life.
That’s the paradox of being a surveyor. Loving the process while knowing the outcome isn’t always easy to swallow.
