Putting down my fall pre emergent. I’m using Specticle Flow on warm season grass at 3.5 oz per acre. I do split applications, so I’ll be coming back in November with another round. Specticle Flow is expensive, but it does a great job on Poa annua and helps prevent many other weeds before they become a problem. If you’re looking for a more affordable option, use a pre emergent with prodiamine as the active ingredient. Apply according to the label and water it in.

Pre emergent works by stopping weeds before they become a problem.

But timing is everything. Here in Oklahoma, I like to get my fall pre emergent down around September, as soil temperatures start dropping toward 70 degrees.

Those winter weeds may be germinating before you ever see them, and by spring, they can become a big problem.

I use Specticle Flow because I really like it for Poa annua prevention on warm season turf, but it is more expensive.

Prodiamine is another good, more affordable option for preventing many weeds.

Whatever you use, follow the label and make sure you get it watered in. That fall application can make a huge difference come spring.

You should get results with this mix. I know it works on fescue, Bermuda, and Zoysia. You do have to be careful if the lawn is drought stressed.

At this point in the season, I’d focus less on crabgrass and more on getting your pre emergent down. I mainly wanted to share this because I’ve seen a lot of people saying they’re having trouble getting results on crabgrass.

Mix rate:

* Quinclorac: 1.45 oz per 1,000 sq. ft.
* Sulfentrazone: 0.2 oz per 1,000 sq. ft.

Pre emergent works by preventing weeds before they come up, but you need to apply it before they start germinating. September is an ideal time, usually as soil temperatures consistently get around 70°F. There’s still time, but it’s better to be early than late.

You can use Prodiamine to help prevent weeds like henbit and other weeds that start showing up in late winter and spring. Specticle Flow is more expensive, but it does a really good job on poa annua.
