Random texts from Chad. He didn’t want anything, he just wanted to text me and lift my day.
If you’re lucky in life you meet a few people who just have a charisma about them. They light up a room, or a job site, with their attitude. Chad had that charisma. You generally heard him before you saw him and what you heard was a man enjoying his work & his co-workers who were his brothers and his friends.
I was blessed to know Chad for nearly 16 years and I admired him. What he lacked in stature he made up for in a never quit, stay positive attitude. He kept getting in there and giving it what we got. You couldn’t outwork him. I tried on a shutdown once. He was a ball of energy that you had to harness and focus and then get out of his way. Sometimes he would have to do things twice but even with correcting his mistake he still put the work in faster than you did.
I had enough interaction with Chad to watch him react to hard times. Challenges that life threw at him. Those things in life that can only be described as “this sucks”. Instead of whining about the situation he just embraced the suck. He just kept getting in there and giving it what we got.
Although he did not know it, Chad was a leader. I witnessed him take helpers under his wing and teach them. Chad was not a foreman and had never indicated a desire to be one. But he led men and he never realized it. He led with his go, go, go attitude, his infectious smile and his kind heart. A big, open, kind heart. The kind of heart that just texts you in the middle of the day to let you know he loves you, he’s thankful, and he’s going to keep giving it.
Chad was a man amongst men. He was a man I admired and loved. Our shop is a sad place as we grieve. My personal sense of loss is deep and I know many of his co-workers who are his friends are profoundly and deeply sad. Please pray for these men and women.
Chads brother, Dustin, also works with us and we grieve for his loss. It’s unimaginable. We love you. We wish you peace and love as you weather this storm.
Chad used to take off work on his birthday. He rarely used his PTO because he loved to work. This year I saw him at the Sunset Amphitheater 90 feet in the air, freezing his ass off in January giving it what we got. I took a picture of him in the lift and sent it to him. This was his response……
“Thats bad ass brother”
“Thats what thought to self normally take day off but something like this going its not normal job we got get in there keep going”
The Sunset Amphitheater will be completed and it will finish with Chads name still on the roster and his name still on a crew. He deserves that recognition.
Chad Avery is irreplaceable. We will miss him deeply. I’ll miss hearing “What’s up big dawg” followed by a a genuine and heartfelt hug.
We are going to embrace this suck and we are going to keep giving it what we got. We are going to text each other for no reason than to lift their day and we are going to bring charisma and kindness to our jobs. Exactly the way Chad did.
