DAY 2 of 2 of donating plants to Coyote Trail Elementary

Had to sneak the teacher who coordinated this project one of the cactus art loaves from Barrio Bread
Funny enough I only found out about Barrio Bread because someone came to my house to pick up plants and was kind enough to bring me a loaf of locally made bread so I figured why not keep it going
Spread the joy cactus bread plants whatever makes you happy will probably make somebody else happy too
Also I am insanely jealous of this absolute beast of a rainwater collector. Everyone in Tucson who has plants in their yard should seriously take advantage of the city’s rainwater harvesting rebate while it’s still around. We live in the desert might as well save every free drop we get

What’s the actual name of the Joshua tree, and why is it called that? The Joshua tree earned its name from 19th century Mormons who trekked the Mojave desert and believed the plant visually represented the biblical figure Joshua reaching towards the promised land or to pray towards the sky.

The real name the experts use is Yucca Brevifolia, and it is important to know the name so it doesn’t get mixed up with other relative yuccas which may appear to look like Joshua trees.

This amazing desert survivor can only be pollinated by the yucca moth, a fantastic example of obligate mutualism, not to be mixed up with parasitism, which only one would benefit but the two mutually work together so that the flower hosting the yucca moths eggs isn’t overfilled causing the flower to abort, and that enough flowers are pollinated beyond the one the moth uses to lay its eggs that the Joshua tree may have another generation of seeds that can germinate without being eaten by the yucca moth larvae.
