Looking for something fun and meaningful to do this weekend? Beat the heat in Tucson, and head up with us on Mt. Lemmon for a volunteer camping weekend among the pines and fall colors. We’ll be back at Spencer Canyon, restoring areas that were burned during 2020’s Bighorn Fire. Volunteers will learn how to build rock structures at priority springs and other sites. Our goal is to slow down precious water, so it can better infiltrate into the ground and make this area thrive once again. Note: Carpooling from SIA’s Tucson office is available, and day-trippers are welcome. If you’re interested in coming, make sure to sign up by tomorrow, Oct. 3, at noon. Get full details and sign up here: https://ow.ly/w6WV50Tovhg.

Interested in attending the 3rd annual Festival of the Sky Islands in Moctezuma, Sonora, this Oct. 11-12? Well, we'd love for you to join us in celebrating what makes this region truly unique, both ecologically and culturally. The celebration will take place a few hours south of Douglas, located in the southernmost part of the Sky Islands. The festival will have cultural performances, local music, a multitude of educational stands and activities representing organizations throughout the region, as well as presentations, field trips, and camping. It's a wonderful chance to meet folks who call the same region home. Expect to practice your Spanish, try some bacanora, eat some tacos, learn about wonderful work that’s being done throughout the Sky Islands, and of course connect further as a community in how we can continue to protect, restore, and conserve the immense biodiversity in our region.

If you're thinking about joining us from Arizona but have questions about what to expect and where to camp or stay, we've got you covered. Join us Sept. 30 at 9:30 a.m. for this short virtual Coffee Break: https://ow.ly/YQxQ50TrW3z. Our Mexico Program Manager Zach Palma will be on hand to answer your questions and to share latest details on activities planned.

Love fireflies in the Sky Islands as much as we do? Here’s a chance to help protect their habitat and that of 100 other imperiled species that depend on scarce water sources like springs and wetlands. We have a match going right now, and all donations to support our water stewardship work will be matched up to $15,000, and all monthly donations will be matched for one year: https://ow.ly/nKNA50Tlmyb

Your gift will help us train new Spring Seekers, for instance, and get them to vital sites such as springs in the Patagonia Mountains, where rare Southwest spring fireflies live and where the Hermosa Mine is poised to pump and dump millions of gallons of groundwater each day.

Sky Island Alliance experts and volunteers have already completed 193 spring surveys in the Patagonias to establish baseline data before pumping began. We also flooded decision-makers with opposition letters during a recent comment period for the mine. A gift today will help train new volunteers, analyze data, expand our spring rescue projects, and bolster our advocacy here and throughout the Sky Islands.

Together, we can ensure there’s diligent oversight of this mine and protection for our region's water sources and wildlife.
