Line and Space LLC, Architects

Line and Space LLC, Architects Leaders in resource conserving architecture since 1978 In addition to being architects, we are general contractors.

Line and Space, LLC was founded in 1978 in Tucson, Arizona by Les Wallach, FAIA, to facilitate the design and building of environmentally sensitive architecture that respects and responds to existing site conditions. Our work is known internationally and has been recognized by peers through the receipt of over 140 architectural and environmental design awards, including the American Institute of A

rchitects (AIA) Committee on the Environment (2-time recipient), the AIA Western Mountain Region Firm of the Year, and the AIA Arizona Sustainable Firm of the Year. We strive for quiet integration of structure and landscape – our projects encourage and demonstrate notions of sustainability and environmental stewardship. We are students of regional influences and favor the deeper meaning of entry sequence, scale, materials, color and form, all of which are important in successful architecture. Having built some of our projects gives us unique experience and invaluable knowledge of construction, allowing us to maximize architectural possibilities within budgetary constraints.

Line and Space was honored to be in San Diego on June 10 to attend the 2026 IDEAS Awards, hosted by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC).

During the banquet, the University of Arizona Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine (AWCIM) received a 2026 IDEAS Award for Excellence in Architecture—one of only six projects nationwide recognized by ASIC and Building Design+Construction.

The IDEAS Awards celebrate projects that showcase the possibilities of structural steel through innovation, design excellence, sustainability, and resilience. From the beginning, this project was driven by a vision to create a place that integrates healing, learning, and connection. Receiving this recognition is a testament to the dedication, creativity, and collaboration of an extraordinary team.

We are deeply grateful to our project partners who helped bring this vision to life: The University of Arizona; UA College of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture; Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine; Andrew Weil, M.D.; University of Arizona Health Sciences; Esther Sternberg, M.D.; DPR Construction; J.B. Steel; and Martin White & Griffis Structural Engineers.

Congratulations to everyone involved in making this remarkable project possible.

Richard Elias Mission Library is officially open.

On June 13, we joined Pima County Public Library, local leaders, community members, and the Elias family to celebrate the grand opening and ribbon-cutting of the newly expanded library.

The dedication honored the legacy of Richard Elias, whose lifelong commitment to the Tucson community was reflected throughout the event. His dedication to public service and bringing people together continues to inspire future generations.

As designers, it is especially meaningful to create spaces that celebrate the individuals who help shape our communities. The Richard Elias Mission Library stands as both a resource for learning and a lasting tribute to a leader whose impact will be felt for years to come.

We are grateful to have played a role in bringing this vision to life.

On April 24, Arizona Masonry Council hosted its 34th Annual Excellence in Masonry Architecture Awards at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix.

Attending the event, Line and Space Principals Henry Tom and Johnny Birkinbine were joined by Marty Klell of Pima County Facilities Management and Paul Pena from Lloyd Construction Company, Inc.. We were honored to receive the 2026 Excellence in Masonry Award for the recently completed Pima County Northwest Service Center in Tucson, AZ.

The project reflects a commitment to material honesty, craft, and long-term resilience. Through the preservation of the former bowling alley’s existing basalt stone masonry wall and the integration of new exposed concrete masonry construction, the project establishes a contemporary civic landmark rooted in Tucson’s desert context and architectural heritage.

We feel a tremendous level of gratitude for the talented people who helped realize this project.

Thank you to the Arizona Masonry Council for this recognition.

Our Line and Space team recently participated in a photo shoot of the Richard Elías-Mission Library, directed by Bradley Wheeler Photo, capturing the project prior to turning it over to Pima County Public Library.

For our team, this moment is one of reflection— seeing how light, material, and form come together as well as experiencing the spaces as they were imagined.

It’s a unique moment to pause and document the project just before it begins its next chapter—taking on a new life as a space for the community.

Stay tuned for the official dedication date.
