A sign is one of the few things a crane sets that the public looks at every day afterward.

A monument or pylon sign has to come down onto its base square and plumb, and there is very little room to correct it once it is there. The lot is usually still open while it happens, with customers parking around the setup. Most of the difficulty is placement rather than weight.

A storm moved through downtown Tucson on August 27 and left several large trees down at Armory Park.

Trees that size are too heavy to pull out with a truck, and the park is surrounded by parked cars, fencing and light poles, so every section has to be lifted clear and set down in a controlled location. Hook Crane's experienced operators made short work of it.

Hook Crane has been a family business in Tucson since 1978. This is home. We are part of this community, and we were glad to help clear it.

A tipped machine is not a planned lift. Nothing is marked for rigging and there is no spec sheet for the position it landed in.

Truss delivery arrives on the supplier's schedule, not yours. If the crane cannot get into position that day, the bundle sits on the ground and the framing crew loses a day.

The weight of the package is rarely what limits the job. Where the crane can set up is. The driveway, the block wall, the slope of the lot, the property line, and whether the ground will hold outriggers all decide where the crane sits. Where it sits decides how far it has to reach. A house on a hillside lot in the Catalina Foothills and the same house on a flat lot in Marana need two different setups.

Better to work that out when we scope the job than on delivery morning.

A well pump has to come up the same way it went down. In line with the casing, under control, no side pull on the column.

That part is the crane's job. Set up square over the wellhead so the line stays plumb. Hold a steady rate coming up and going back down. Drift off center and the column bears against the casing, and a scored casing turns a pump swap into a much larger repair with the well still down.

Two different credentials, two different requirements, and a crane operator working across Southern Arizona needs both.

OSHA requires crane operator certification on construction sites under 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC. NCCCO is the accredited body most of the industry tests through. Operators pass a written exam and a hands-on practical, then recertify every five years.

MSHA training is a separate requirement. It covers mine and aggregate sites, and it applies to contractors, not just mine employees. Without it, a crane does not get through the gate.

Every kind of crane work has a season down here. Most people find that out the hard way.

October through April
Average highs drop to 86° by October and keep falling. This is the window for long structural sets, steel, and trusses, where crews are on the site all day.

April
Typically the windiest month of the year in Tucson. Wind governs tall boom work more than anything else does. Build slack into anything running high.

May into early June
Driest stretch of the year, averaging under a tenth of an inch of rain. Firm ground and predictable days. It closes June 15 when monsoon starts.

Mid June through September
Monsoon. Early starts, buffer days, and a hard look at the ground before setup.

June through August
Highs run 98° to 101°. This is when rooftop and cooling equipment fails, so the work is urgent instead of planned.

Knowing the window changes what a job costs and how long it takes. We have been reading these seasons since 1978.

Two inches of rain in an hour does not just cost you a day; it changes the job site.

Graded lots hold water. Wash crossings soften. Fill that compacted hard in May gives under an outrigger in August. A crane needs firm, level ground under every pad, and after a monsoon storm that is a judgment call somebody has to make standing on the dirt.

We run 14 cranes, so we bring the one that suits the ground instead of the one that happens to be free. Operators are NCCCO and MSHA certified. We have been setting up on Southern Arizona sites since 1978, wet and dry.

The crane is usually the easy part.

The hard part is a commercial oven wedged where nothing was designed to lift it. Machinery that has to come out of a building through an opening smaller than the machine. A load that has to stay level the entire way or it is scrap when it lands. A packaged unit that has to come off a flatbed and land level on a pad.

One customer had a commercial oven stuck on an elephant stand. We were there within two and a half hours of the call.

That is rigging, and it is a separate skill from running a crane. Our staff includes riggers, drivers, and job coordinators, not just operators. Rigging is one of the four things we build the fleet around, not an add-on to a crane rental.

If something has to come out, go in, or move across a plant floor, the rigging plan determines whether it survives.
